1 Junior Member Leadership Course Annie Auxiliary is searching for young ladies who want to become better members. Can you help Annie?

What is leadership and why you can be a leader Most leaders are not born they are made. A good leader knows as much as possible about the organization, has a passion for the work and understands parliamentary procedure. This course is a first step in becoming an effective American Legion Auxiliary Junior member and leader. Information you will learn about in this course: History of the organization Your Image Suggested Agenda Roles of officers Flag Etiquette Protocol for meetings Preamble 2 Annie Auxiliary’s search is helping her find information about being a good member. Join her in her search.

History of the American Legion Auxiliary 3 Veterans from World War I formed an organization called The American Legion while they were in France. When they came home, they formed an auxiliary to support their desire to continue to serve the nation in peacetime. So began the American Legion Auxiliary. Let’s begin by learning about the Auxiliary

National Presidents 4 Mrs Edith Hobart, of Ohio, was elected as the first American Legion Auxiliary National President Homework: Find out if someone from your state has been elected to serve as an National President? Annie has discovered you have homework!

Founding purposes 5 Rehabilitation of veterans Children and Youth activities Serving our communities Annie Auxiliary discovers our first programs Peace and Security

Your Image A first impression is how someone sees you for the first time. A first impression is how someone hears you for the first time. A first impression is what someone thinks of you when you write to them. 6 Annie Auxiliary is learning about first impressions. How do you measure up?

More image facts 7 Public speaking is easy if you practice, practice, practice. Personal appearance is how you ‘package’ yourself. Personal grooming, keeping yourself neat and clean helps you feel good. Good self esteem means learning to like yourself. Annie Auxiliary continues to investigate why image is important. How do others see you?

How to lead a meeting and how to be an active participant 8 Annie Auxiliary is finding it is fun to take part in meetings. What’s an agenda? How do you make a motion? How can I change a motion with an amendment? What’s a mock meeting?

Leadership Roles 9 Follow along with Annie Auxiliary as she learns about the offices she can be elected or appointed to. President Vice President Secretary Treasurer Chaplain Sergeant-at-Arms Color Bearer Membership Chairman

Flag Etiquette 10 Annie Auxiliary is anxious to learn how to honor the American Flag. Which way does the Eagle fly? How do you hold the pole? What does it mean to ‘post’ the colors? How do you salute the flag?

Auxiliary Protocol 11 Annie Auxiliary has discovered there are courtesies given to guests. She thinks learning about them will make you a better member. At meetings, it’s important to make your guests feel welcome and special. There are several ways to show your respect.

Preamble 12 Annie Auxiliary proudly repeats the American Legion Auxiliary preamble. Now she discovers what each section means. For God and Country…. These one hundred thirty three words are familiar to every member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Each time they are voiced, the commitment to the Auxiliary is made anew. The American Legion Auxiliary was formed to aid in peace-time service of the American Legion to the United States.

Yikes ! ! ! It’s Exam time Now it is time to test what you have learned about Parliamentary Procedure and Protocol. 13 Annie Auxiliary finds it’s important to review what you have learned. Are you ready?

Congratulations! You have completed the American Legion Auxiliary Junior Leadership Course. 14 Annie Auxiliary hopes to make the most of what she has learned about being an informed member. How about you?
