Why Does Globalization of Popular Culture Cause Problems? C4K4

Objectives 1) Threat to Folk Culture. 2) Environmental Impact of Popular Culture

How MDC’s threaten LCD’s Culture Rise in incomes = rise in demand of Western products. Loss of Traditional Values: may turn away from traditional material culture of food, clothing, and shelter. Why?

Style of Power

This is What Success Looks Like

In Another Dimension

American Woman

Imagine

The REAL WORLD As LDC become more like MDC: traditional fashion is lost. What has been happening to the traditional role of women?

Negative Impact of Women’s Work Uneducated & poor women working outside the home traditionally helped their family through agriculture and handicrafts. What does a poor woman want? What does a rich man want? Rise of the sex industry in LDC?

India’s Marriage Dowries Dowry is a small gift from the family of the groom to the family of the bride. Reversal of Dowry in India and expected to be larger. Why? Emphasis on consumer goods in male dominated society. Repercussions of unsatisfactory” dowries have been murder. Aborted fetuses of females higher than males.

Threat of Foreign Media Imperialism Popular customs can be threat to national security. Why? Media/ News = Western Controlled and reflect Western beliefs and social norms. i.e: upward social mobility, relative freedom of women, glorification of youth and violence

Response to Cultural/ Economic Imperialism LDC are too poor to compete with MDC news media Sensationalized news versus more meaningful news Banning satellite dishes, programs, websites, movies.

American vs Chinese Values

Confronting a Problem

Sense of Self

Weekend Activities

Expressing Anger

Waiting in Line

Status of Leader

How Relationships Work

Punctuality

Transportation

Environmental Impacts of Popular Culture Imposed on rather that spring from environment. Spatial expression is manufactured elsewhere product recognition = greater consumption???

Increased Demand for Natural Resources Negative impact: depletion of scarce natural resources. What resources are causing conflict? Environmental Pollution
