Exodus 16:1-18

Exodus 16 New International Version (NIV) Manna and Quail 16 The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the L ORD ’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” 4 Then the L ORD said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5 On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.”

6 So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the L ORD who brought you out of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you will see the glory of the L ORD, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” 8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the L ORD when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the L ORD.” 9 Then Moses told Aaron, “Say to the entire Israelite community, ‘Come before the L ORD, for he has heard your grumbling.’” 10 While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory of the L ORD appearing in the cloud.

11 The L ORD said to Moses, 12 “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the L ORD your God.’” 13 That evening quail came and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. 14 When the dew was gone, thin flakes like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15 When the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread the L ORD has given you to eat. 16 This is what the L ORD has commanded: ‘Everyone is to gather as much as they need. Take an omer [a] for each person you have in your tent.’” 17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.a

See the contrast between Ex 16:3 and Ex 16:17 “Wanted” and “Needed” 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”

17 The Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some little. 18 And when they measured it by the omer, the one who gathered much did not have too much, and the one who gathered little did not have too little. Everyone had gathered just as much as they needed.

Want – “to desire or wish for (something)”. May get it by working hard, from others, but you may also never see it come true. Need – “something that will decrease your well-being if you do not have it”.

Israelites Meat – world; what they want Manna - what they need

Two more issues: Rights – Something you can do without asking for permission. But cannot deprive the equal rights of others (Cambodia, UK welfare…). Privileges – Something you cannot do unless you ask permission. Granted to you by an authority and not everyone necessarily has this.

This is about meeting the Core Emotional Need for Reasonable Limits

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges Wisdom to know the difference… God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, The courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges Please put the following items into at least one of the four categories – Rights, Privileges, Needs and Wants. To live, opinion, ambition, safety, healthy friendships, risky but fun activities, revenge, hobby (soccer, badminton), clothes, types of clothes, haircut, type of haircut, food, relationship with God, vote, hand phone, freedom, connection with church, computer, discipling, choice of subjects at school, small groups,

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges dreams, core emotional needs, pet dog, exposed to some sunlight, adventure, holiday overseas (parents/kids), room decoration, education, Quiet Times, government welfare, TV, pocket money, regular exercise, girlfriend/boyfriend, marry, suitable partner, shower/bath, having my own room, have a job, spiritual values,

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges Not all issues can be categorized into these four, but many can and it will help us to grow and get along with others if we do..

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges Israelites – “Wants” became “Rights”. Forgot their “Needs” and what were “Privileges”. Result: Unhealthy Conflicts between Israelites and their leaders and God.

Exodus 16:2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. Ex 16:8 Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”

Story of Scott – Permission given…

Today: Unhealthy conflicts with others, parents, peers, mentors, leaders…

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges Will do well in life with all of them if you show Responsibility… E.g. Drivers license Passport Owe a piece of land Having a child

Poor, irresponsible behaviors should have consequences… Teen proofing stories…

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges A good mentor – Romans 13:8 “Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” A Healthy Group – Boyfriend/Girlfriend -

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges If everything is about “rights” without any awareness of “privileges” and “responsibility”, it can cause a lot of conflict.

Wants, Needs, Rights, Privileges Homework for all youth – Complete putting all items in the four categories. Soma have more than one… Wisdom to know the difference between wants, needs, rights and privileges. Be responsible and it will go well with you.
