Warm Up  Where did rulers in the ancient world derive their power from?  Review : What were the 2 forms of Chinese religion in early China? Can you draw any conclusions from those two religious practices about the values in ancient China?

While the Zhou did simply adopt much of old Shang culture, they also did introduce new things: A new idea of royalty that claimed rulers got their authority from heaven. This was known as the Mandate from Heaven. Chinese would believe in divine rule. This led to a pattern of rise and fall of dynasties in China known as the dynastic cycle. The Zhou introduced feudalism. Zhou introduced the first coined money, roads and canals Iron tools instead of bronze with trained workers called civil servants;. PP Design of T. Loessin; Akins H.S.

Mandate of Heaven  Heaven = force that keeps balance in the world  It is not a place you go to after you die  Similar to the “force” or “Dao”  A ruler has the right to rule so long as heaven is kept happy!  Heaven is happy if the people are cared for.  What are some of the responsibilities of the ruler?
