Muslim- Christian Clash Causes Control of SW Asia 11 th century Religious- Christians sought to re-establish their faith in SW Asia Political- Byzantine Empire wanted to retake land lost from the Seljuk Turks and asked Christians in western Europe for help; Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches

Muslim- Christian Clash Causes Economic- Trade; Europeans were concerned that luxury goods from Asia (spices and silk) would be cut off if the Byzantine capital Constantinople, came under Muslim control

Muslim- Christian Clash results Militarily- Europeans gained only small territories eastern coast of the Mediterranean; centers of Christianity and trade with “the East” Jerusalem -city occupied by Muslims, Jews, and Christians Culturally- great advancements for the Europeans; Greek and Roman literature; Renaissance This started western Europe on a path toward global hegemony (control)
