Disaster Epidemiology Lessons From Bam Earthquake Dec 26, 2003 Iran Part 1: Seismic situation and disaster management system in Iran 3

Learning objectives:  To view the seismic situation of Iran  To understand the Disaster Management System in Iran 4

Disaster Epidemiology Lessons From Bam Earthquake Dec 26, 2003 Iran Part 1-A: Seismic situation of Iran 5

6 Ruins of the Takht-e-Jamshid, the former capital of Iran in 2500 years ago, near the city of Shiraz

8 Very high risk High risk Medium risk Low risk

History of earthquakes in Iran  In the 20th century alone, 20 major earthquakes claimed more than 140,000 lives, destroyed several villages and cities and caused extensive economic damage to Iran. 9

History of earthquakes in Kerman province  An earthquake with 6.9 magnitude on Richter scale in 1981 with 3000 death and many injuries.  Another earthquake in 1981 with 7.3 magnitude on Richter scale in 1981 with 1500 death and 1000 injuries. 10

Earthquake of the capital: The major concern  Tehran, the capital city of Iran, lies over at least five or six major fault lines.  My house is just over one of them!! 11

Accumulation of earthquake disaster risk + Future earthquake mega-disasters Risk of major loss of human life, physical and economic damage 12 Future Earthquake of the capital: =

When will a sever earthquake shake Tehran or other large cities in your country?  I do not know. How about you? 13

Disaster Epidemiology Lessons From Bam Earthquake Dec 26, 2003 Iran Part 1-B: Disaster management system in Iran 14

Disaster Management System in Iran Ministry of Interior (MOI), 1991 Bureau for Research and Coordination of Safety and Rehabilitation Activities (BRCSR) National Disaster Task Force (NDTF) 15

National Committee for the Reduction of Natural Disasters (NCRND) Ministries Research institutes Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) Management & Planning Organization (MPO) 16 Disaster Management System in Iran
