PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM IMPACT AREA RECOMMENDATIONS

THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM RECOMMENDS THE FOLLOWING IMPACT AREA FOR THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF MOBILE - HEALTHY CHILDREN: HUNGER, NUTRITION & FITNESS PROJECT DEVELOPMENT ASSESSMENT & RECOMMENDATIONS

THE IMPACT MODEL

 PROJECT DEVELOPMENT CONDUCTED RESEARCH TO DETERMINE NEEDS OF COMMUNITY AND LEAGUE MEMBERS;  IN FALL 2011, EDUCATION WAS CHOSEN AS THE TOPIC;  IN WINTER 2011, ISSUES WERE NARROWED DOWN TO 5 FROM ALL DATA COLLECTED. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

 CHILD SAFETY (STRANGER DANGER)  CHILDHOOD OBESITY  CHILD INTERNET SAFETY  BULLYING  LITERACY IMPACT AREA CHOICES

 85-90% OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE CASES ARE COMMITTED BY FAMILY OR CLOSE FRIENDS*;  MAJORITY OF PLACEMENTS WOULD REQUIRE INTENSIVE TRAINING;  PREVIOUS SIMILAR PLACEMENTS HAVE NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN ATTRACTING LEAGUE MEMBERS. *Crimes Against Children Research Center CHILD SAFETY (STRANGER DANGER)

 TOO NARROW ON ITS OWN;  WOULD FACE SOME OF SAME CHALLENGES AS CHILD SAFETY IN TERMS OF TRAINING FOR PLACEMENTS;  CONCERN OVER FINDING APPROPRIATE PLACEMENTS FOR OUR MEMBERS;  LOOKED AT POTENTIAL OF COMBINING WITH BULLYING. CHILD INTERNET SAFETY

 DROPPED TO LAST CHOICE IN APRIL 2012 SURVEY;  COMMUNITY RESPONSE SHOWED LITERACY WAS ALREADY BEING COVERED IN COMMUNITY;  MOBILE AREA EDUCATION FOUNDATION IS LEADER IN THIS ISSUE – LEFT LITTLE ROOM FOR JLM TO “OWN IT”. LITERACY

 COMMUNITY HAS A BRAND NEW AND UNPROVEN INITIATIVE– BUT SOMEONE DOES HAVE OWNERSHIP OF THE PROBLEM;  DIFFICULT TO DEVELOP NEW PLACEMENTS TO ADEQUATELY MEET LARGE NUMBER OF MEMBERS & THEIR WANTS, NEEDS;  PLACEMENTS WILL VERY LIKELY BE DAYTIME HEAVY DUE TO OUTREACH TO SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN. MEMBERS WANT LESS WEEKDAY PLACEMENTS AND MORE FLEXIBILITY IN SCHEDULING;  PLACEMENTS WILL BE VERY “HANDS-ON” WITHIN THE COMMUNITY, DIRECT CONTACT WITH PARENTS & STUDENTS. MEMBERS WANT PLACEMENTS THAT ENGAGE OTHER JLM MEMBERS. BULLYING

 HEALTH SERVICES (INCLUDING EXERCISE, HUNGER, & NUTRITION) RANKED 2ND IN FALL 2011 MEMBER SURVEY;  OBESITY RANKED 2 ND IN SPRING 2012 MEMBER SURVEY;  4 OF THE 10 MOST REQUESTED JLM PLACEMENTS INCLUDE A NUTRITION AND/OR OBESITY COMPONENT;  Wilmer Hall “On the Run” Volunteer  Kids in the Kitchen Volunteer  Prodisee Pantry- Volunteer June to August  Bay Area Food bank “Backpack Program” Mobile County Volunteer August-May OBESITY/NUTRITION

 OVERALL, THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM FOUND OBESITY/NUTRITION TO BE THE BEST FIT WITH THE NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY AND MEMBERS.  IN JUNE 2012 THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM RECOMMENDED OBESITY/NUTRITION TO PLANNING & RESEARCH COUNCIL, WHICH VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO ADOPT THIS IMPACT AREA. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM ASSESSMENT OF DATA

 TWENTY YEARS AGO ALL STATES WERE BELOW 15% OBESITY. NOW 38/50 STATES RATE 25% OBESE.  NO ONE IS BELOW 15%. COLORADO IS LOWEST AT 19.8%.  IN 2011 AL RANKED 2 ND IN THE NATION FOR OBESITY;  IN THE LAST 15 YEARS OUR OBESITY RATE HAS DOUBLED TO 32.3%;  DIABETES HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED IN AL SINCE 1996 TO 12.2%, AND ALMOST 34% HAVE HYPERTENSION. From: Center for Disease Control and Prevention, FACTS ABOUT OBESITY:

 CHILDHOOD OBESITY HAS MORE THAN TRIPLED IN THE LAST 30 YEARS.  IN CHILDREN AGES 6-11 THE OBESITY RATE IN 1980 WAS 7% AND WENT UP TO NEARLY 20% IN  IN AGES 12-19, RATES WENT FROM 5% TO 18% OVER THAT SAME TIME PERIOD.  IN 2008 MORE THAN 1/3 OF CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN THE U.S.A. WERE OBESE OR OVERWEIGHT. From: Center for Disease Control and Prevention, FACTS ABOUT OBESITY, cont’d:

OBESITY TRENDS

 MEMBERSHIP SURVEY RESULTS:  MEMBERSHIP RESULTS SHOWED ACTIVES, PROVISIONALS AND SUSTAINERS RANKED NUTRITION ABOVE OBESITY IN FALL SURVEY;  HUNGER ALSO RANKED ABOVE OBESITY IN FALL MEMBERSHIP RESULTS;  OBESITY RANKED 2 ND IN APRIL 2012 MEMBERSHIP RESULTS – NUTRITION AND HUNGER WERE NOT OFFERED AS OPTIONS IN THIS SURVEY.  DUE TO OVERWHELMING ACCEPTANCE OF ISSUES OF HUNGER & NUTRITION, PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM RECOMMENDS THE BROADER IMPACT AREA. OBESITY OR BROADER ISSUE?

FALL SURVEY RESULTS No InterestLeast interestNeutralSome Interest Greatest InterestCount Percent Greatest interest Percent No Interest Percent Some & greatest Interest Actives Obesity Nutrition Hunger Provisional Obesity Nutrition Hunger Sustainer Obesity Nutrition Hunger TOTAL MEMBERSHIP obesity nutrition hunger JLM Membership Survey Results

 IN 2010, KANSAS CITY JUNIOR LEAGUE ESTABLISHED CHILD NUTRITION AS AN IMPACT AREA;  KCJL FOCUSES ON HUNGER (BACKBACK PROGRAM), HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES (FARM TO SCHOOL), FAMILY HEALTHY FOOD EDUCATION (CLASSES, COMMUNITY GARDENS), HEALTHY LIFESTYLES (FITNESS), HEALTHY COOKING (KIDS IN THE KITCHEN), HEALTHY PROGRAMMING (ADOPT A CLASSROOM) WHAT ARE OTHER LEAGUES DOING?

 POLICY ISSUES – RESEARCH POTENTIAL PUBLIC SCHOOL POLICIES TO BE CHANGED, INCLUDING THE NEED FOR MANDATORY RECESS.  75% OF JLM MEMBERS BELIEVE WE SHOULD HAVE PLACEMENTS ADVOCATING CHANGES IN LOCAL/STATE POLICY OR LEGISLATION; 59% WOULD BE WILLING TO TAKE THESE PLACEMENTS. POTENTIAL PLACEMENTS:

 FITNESS PROGRAMS –  “WALKING SCHOOLBUS” WHERE STUDENTS WALK TO SCHOOL WITH ADULT SUPERVISION (PARTNER WITH SMART COAST)  MONSTER DASH – ANNUAL 5K WALK/RUN OR KIDS ON WHEEL RACE WITH BIKES, SKATEBOARDS, SKATES;  WII FITNESS CHALLENGE IN SCHOOLS/AFTER-SCHOOL CARE PROGRAMS/SUMMER PROGRAMS IN SCHOOLS & DAYCARES. POTENTIAL PLACEMENTS:

 NUTRITION EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS  KIDS IN THE KITCHEN – EDUCATE BOTH STUDENTS AND PARENTS ON NUTRITIOUS EATING;  MARCH NUTRITIONAL EVENT/HEALTH FAIR – HEALTH FAIR FOR CHILDREN 5-17 TO INCLUDE A SERIES OF COOKING AND LEARNING ACTIVITY STATIONS THAT RELATE TO THE FOOD PYRAMID AND TEACH THE IMPORTANCE OF LIVING AN ACTIVE, HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. (MARCH IS NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH, POTENTIAL PARTNERS IN USA HOSPITAL AND KIDS IN KITCHEN PLACEMENT) POTENTIAL PLACEMENTS:

 HUNGER  EXPANSION OF THE BACKPACK PROGRAM;  PARTNERSHIPS WITH FOOD BANKS, PRODISEE PANTRY;  COMMUNITY GARDENS – WHICH INCORPORATE BOTH HUNGER AND HEALTHY EATING CHOICES FOR LOW INCOME COMMUNITIES. POTENTIAL PLACEMENTS:

 PARTNERING WITH HEALTH EXPERTS AND SCHOOLS COULD ALLOW US TO MEASURE BMI AND OTHER HEALTH STATS AT BEGINNING AND END OF SCHOOL YEAR, WITH PARENTAL PERMISSION;  HOW MANY SCHOOL CHILDREN DO WE PLAN TO FEED WHO WOULD OTHERWISE GO HUNGRY?  HOW MANY STUDENTS/PARENTS PARTICIPATED IN PROGRAM?  SURVEYS BEFORE AND AFTER ABOUT CHANGE IN BEHAVIOR. POTENTIAL MEASURABLES

 ALTHOUGH THERE IS STILL MUCH WORK/RESEARCH TO BE DONE, THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM FEELS CONFIDENT THAT HEALTHY CHILDREN: HUNGER NUTRITION & FITNESS IS BROAD ENOUGH TO CREATE PLACEMENTS FOR OUR LARGE LEAGUE, BUT NARROW ENOUGH TO COMMUNICATE OUR GOALS AND MAKE A MEASURABLE IMPACT IN OUR COMMUNITY. SUMMARY
