Using the thesaurus on your desk, find three “new” terms that describe YOU. Put them in sentences that support/explain “why” or “how” the term describes you.

Connotative: The emotional implications and associations that a word may carry, in contrast to its denotative meanings.. Denotative: The direct or dictionary meaning of a word, the literal meaning, in contrast to its figurative or associated meanings

Denotation. The dictionary meaning of a word. The literal meaning of a word. Connotation. The emotional or cultural meaning attached to a word.

Examples: The words home, house, residence and dwelling all have the same denotation, but the connotation of each word is very different.

Denotation: Where a person lives at any given time.. Connotation: Home: cozy, loving, comfortable House: the actual building or structure Residence: cold, no feeling Dwelling: primitive or basic surroundings

Thin vs. Scrawny -skinny, flimsy, not fat, small, less amount of fatty tissue EMOTIONAL CONNECTION: thin= less hurtful, basic scrawny= inferior, infuriating, relate the comment to being like a rat Home vs. House

Fight vs. Brawl

Career vs. Work Hungry vs. Starving Mad vs. Furious

Note: below was created/typed by a student… Career vs. work denotative: both are jobs Connotative: career is like your dream job and something you look forward to doing while work could be just a job you go to and maybe don’t look forward to it; you do it just because you have to.

Note: below was created/typed by a student… Fight vs. Brawl Denotation is that fight and brawl both mean a disagreement. Connotation is that fight is more simpler and more about two people that can just be arguing and not fighting physically. Brawl is everyone fighting at the same time physically.

Note: below was created/typed by a student… Hungry Vs. Starving Denotative: a lack of food Connotative: someone has a lack of food and a risk of dying from a lack of food. Hungry also has connotative meaning because when you’re hungry, you don’t only want food but there may be a situation where you are hungry for knowledge or the hunger for sleep.

Note: below was created/typed by a student… Career Vs. Work Denotative: Someone’s job or duty Connotative: career can infer that the person is successful and more professional. While work can say that someone is lower class and their job is a burden.

Hungry vs Starving
