PEAK Roland Smith 2007 Coming of Age - Fiction Abel D. 4 th class period 4 th class period

Setting The setting in the book PEAK changes a lot, due to the fact that the narrator of the story is climbing a mountain. The story starts off in New York, on a skyscraper more specifically. It then take the narrator to Thailand, then Katmandu. Then, he is whisked off the Mount Everest. The setting is important because it shows that a 14-year old boy can accomplish anything. If the setting had been different, I think the story would lose its touch of danger.

Characters CharacterPhysical Characteristics Adjectives of Personality Text Evidence /Explanation of Adjectives PEAKSlimAngerHe’s mad at Sun-Jo. Good climberForgivingHe forgives Sun-Jo and even allows him to get to the summit first. AthleticCaringHe’s still able to write to his half siblings. HOLLYNot AthleticAnnoyingJosh said that he really annoys him. Red hairWiseAt the end she is smart enough to stop the climb. High voiceDependantWhen she got to the mountain, she had a chef and a massager.

Conflict There are a lot of different conflicts in the story. However, the main conflict in the story is Peak trying to climb Mount Everest, which is Man vs. Nature. Others might argue that it is Man vs. Society, when Peak is disliked by all the climbers on the climbing team.

Summary of Plot forever A boy named Peak is climbing a skyscraper for the fun of it, but is then “shipped” off with his dad, Josh, so that he can climb Mount Everest. He becomes friends with a boy named Sun-Jo, whose reasons for reaching the summit may be different than most climbers. While climbing, Peak goes through many hardships and changes, like Holly, a reporter, and Zopa, whose words never ceased to confuse him. The choices he makes will changes his life….forever

Theme Sometimes, you should just forgive and forget. Text Evidence 1: Peak’s mad at Sun-Jo for not telling him about him going to the summit. Text Evidence 2: Peak forgives Sun-Jo after a near death experience. Text Evidence 3:After all Peak went through to get to the summit first, he allows Sun-Jo to get there instead of him.

Point of View The author is telling the story in 1 st Person. You can tell it is because it says that he is writing in a Moleskin, which is like a diary.

Symbolism There was some symbolism when they talked about the mountain. It symbolizes an obstacle in Peak’s life and a living for Sun-Jo.

Recommendation Honestly, I would give this book a 6 out of 10 because it doesn’t really grip the reader. My only motivation in finishing the book was to do this essay. I would recommend this book to anyone wh0 is doing an essay because even though I didn’t like the book, it is a book that is great for an essay.

THANK YOU!!!!!!! Have a good day
