What should districts do? 7 Strategies
1. Focus on 21 st Century outcomes – Decide upon the 21 st century skills that every student should have when they graduate from your district. What should districts do? (get broad stakeholder “buy-in”)
2. Be purposeful and intentional – Be “purposeful and intentional” about teaching and assessing these 21 st century skills. What should districts do? (develop rubrics for each of the skills, e.g. Catalina Foothills School District)
3. Align educational support systems to produce 21 st century outcomes. What should districts do?
4. Focus on Professional Development – Design professional development strategies that will help your teachers teach and assess the 21 st century skills that you have chosen. (e.g. Lawrence Township, West Virginia) What should districts do?
5. Focus on Assessment – Be sure you have a broad range of assessments (formative and summative) that measure true 21 st century skills. What should districts do? (e.g. John Bransford (N.C.), New Tech High, CRWA)
6. Align education, workforce development, and economic development. What should districts do?
7. Partner – Focus on the importance of partnerships (after school, youth development, busines community, parents, etc.). What should districts do?
In education, the questions we ask are very important. Conclusion
Are our students ready for the new global economy? Conclusion
Are our students critical thinkers and problem solvers? Are our students globally aware? Are our students self-directed? Are our students good collaborators?
Are our students information and technology literate? Are our students flexible and adaptable? Are our students innovative? Are our students effective communicators? Conclusion
These skills should become the “design specs” for 21 st century education in Nevada. Conclusion
