The Russian Far East occupies a special geographical position in Russia and the Asia-Pacific region and is washed by the seas of the Arctic and the Pacific oceans in north and east. Maps of the region

The pecularity of the Russian Far East is climatic contrasts, with climate varying from rigorous continental to monsoon, due to the vast expansion of its territory from the north to the south (nearly 3,900 km) and from the west to the east (for 2,500-3,000 km). In the northern part of the region, climate is extremely severe with little snow and winter lasting for up to 9 months. In the south, cold winter and humid summer are typical of monsoon climate. Summer in the Primorsky Region Winter scenery in Yakutia Climate of the Far East

The vegetation zones of the region are Arctic tundra (islands and the coast of the Arctic Ocean), the tundra zone and the forest-tundra zone. The coniferous forest (taiga) zone covers the largest area. There is also the zone of deciduous forests and the southern forest-steppe zone. Forests cover more than 40% of the Russian Far East territory. They vary from cedar shrubbery in the north and evergreen taiga to mixed and deciduous forests in the south. The vegetation zones of the region Taiga

Flora of the region Vegetation and flora of the Far East region is one of the richest and the most various in Russia. This area is the original homeland of such plants as ginseng, lotus and cedar. Many other rare species of plants have almost disappeared and they are mentioned in Red Data Book of the Russian Federation. Lotus Ginseng

There is also a great amount of marine and terrestrial animals in the Russian Far East. Different species of fish and clams are a pride of our region. Such animals as Amur leopard, Moon bear, Oriental Stork, White-naped Crane and Siberian(Manchurian, Amur) tiger are evaluated as vulnerable and endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Other animals are squirrel, raccoon dogs, foxes, wolves, American minks, musk rats, polar foxes, sables, Manchurian deer, reindeer and many others. Up to 100 bird species (some of them are the rarest) nest in the Russian Far East. Fauna of the region Amur leopard Moon bear
