Prepared by ITH ESARA The Uses Quotation Marks  Points to remember There are two kinds of quotation marks: single quotation marks [ ‘---’ ] and double quotation marks [ “---” ]. There are two ways to use quotations: 1.to quote the exact words (direct speech) of the speakers or writers. 2.to quote the captions of short works such as books, movies, … or a piece of a long text.

Prepared by ITH ESARA 1.Quotation Marks are used for quoting direct speech or report.  In this case, double quotation marks are used. Any punctuation for closing quoting statement goes at the end of quotations, inside the quotation marks. [ “---.” ],[ “---,” ],[ “---?” ],[ “---!” ],… Examples The teacher ordered, “Don’t go there ” “You have to do exercise regularly ” doctor said. “Wow, I passed ” He greeted. “Are you a couch potato?” He asked. ! ?

Examples “We have,” the workers cried, “the same right.” “We found enough evidences,” said the police. “Therefore, the judge can charge a former Major General of National Police.”,,,...
