Apparently community service is the next big thing…. Jackie Goldstone

During fall semester Zeta Tau Alpha and Kappa Alpha signed a contract with Alpha Phi Alpha to raise money for their philanthropy, the Fistula Foundation. We decided to host a dodgeball tournament. I was the chairperson for Zeta. I basically had to organize the entire event.

I had to do everything, from designing the brackets, to making the t- shirts. I had to get all the teams together and set up all the rules. We set the rules as double elimination.

This is the t-shirt I designed. I based it off Dodgeball, them movie.

This was the first game played, SAE against Pi Kapp.

This dodgeball tournament ended up raising about $600. Compared to our other fundraisers, that was not much. But, we feel that since it was our first “try” we were very successful. Next year, things will be a little more organized, and we will be doing it to benefit our philanthropy, Breast Cancer Education and Awareness.

In addition to the Dodgeball tournament, I have participated in other community service. Included in these were volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank, raising money for the Susan G. Komen foundation, donating blood, cleaning up Patterson for Zeta’s Adopt-a- Highway, and raising money for the American Cancer Society

BMOC Zeta Tau Alpha usually has two main fundraisers a year. In the fall we host a male beauty pageant called “Big Man On Campus.” This year alone we raised $5,000

This year I am also a team co-captain for Zeta Tau Alpha’s Relay for Life team. Our theme this year was “We Think Pink, so Breast Cancer Will Sink.” We had a dunking booth full of SAE’s going all night long. Another way we raised money was by selling breast cancer bracelets, and donuts.

I feel very strongly about Relay for Life. My mother and I have always been involved.

I feel that community service is important for all college students. It gives back to the community, that gives so much to us. It feels good to see yourself making a difference in others’ lives

Community service is important to me because I feel that the community has given so much to me, I should give back to it as well. I think I have benefited greatly from my involvement in my community.
