LKCS and APAA Joint Governing Body Meetings October 28, 2014 LLOYD KENNEDY CHARTER SCHOOL Providing a World of Opportunities… AIKEN PERFORMING ARTS ACADEMY Performing Our Way Into Your Hearts...

The APAA students will host the Halloween Carnival for our LKCS students on Friday, October 31 st. This is a Title I incentive and participation will be based on the following: student behavior, student academic performance and student attendance. The LKCS teachers and administrative staff will award eligible LKCS students a golden ticket to enter the carnival. The school day is comprised of carnival games, activities, prizes, food, a haunted house, candy and animated Halloween-themed movies. Parents, please keep in mind student participation is optional. If you family does not believe in celebrating Halloween, your child can engage in regular school activities away from the carnival activities; along with those students who do not earn a golden ticket. Halloween Costume Guidelines are as follows: Face masks covering the entire face are not allowed. Toy accessories resembling contraband are not allowed. Jeans and t- shirts as a costume are not allowed. Vulgar or obscene graphics and writing are not allowed. Costumes exposing midriffs, chests, backs and legs are not allowed. All student body parts must be covered at all times. Only LKCS students are allowed to wear costumes. APAA students participating in the Haunted House will get dressed at school. Please contact the main office at the number listed below with any questions. Haunted House and Halloween Carnival

The teachers and Administration are very serious about addressing the academic needs of our students. Parents and students are asked to take advantage of our FREE tutoring programs. The are two options currently available: 1) Students who are participating in the After School Program receive homework assistance and tutoring from Ms. Klein and Ms. Van Dyne. 2) Students who require more specialized tutoring can meet with Ms. Lanham, Ms. Damron, and Mr. Morris on the afternoons they stay afterschool. Please note teacher set their own schedules for specialized tutoring. All students are welcome to attend. If you have any questions, contact the main office. FREE Tutoring Programs

Earlier this month the LKCS and APAA conducted a Parent Survey over the telephone. Parents were asked 1) if they were satisfied with our educational services 2) if they had any concerns we should be aware of and 3) if there was anything we are doing they would like to see more of. The results are as follows: Parent Survey Results

The school is committed to creating or locating, and then encompassing, a program geared to promote self esteem and encouragement among our middle school (6 th thru 8 th ) and junior high (9 th thru 10 th ) grade students. We are painfully aware that many students in this age group are struggling to understand themselves and other around them. This is an important new action item and we will keep parents updated on our progress. T he LKCS and APAA teaching staff asks that all parents help keep their children motivated. We find as the holiday season begins, some students lose the focus they possessed when school began. We will continue to offer incentives such as field trips, ice cream sundae parties and special activities. An Idea… Staying Motivated
