Cause for Abuse of Alcohol Whiskey was cheaper than water and safer to drink than water because the water was frequently contaminated. This made chance of alcohol abuse much Higher. This lead many Women to move towards the Temperance movement.

Susann B. Anthony Was Born in Adams massachusetts Her father was the one who told her to get involved with reform movements to abolish slavery and prohibit the sale or use of alcohol. She was the Creator of the New York State Temperance Society.

Methods Used During the Temperance Reform There were many different methods used during the beginning of the Temperance reform. One women, Carry Nation, decided that she would conduct a one women crusade by using a sharp hatchet and chopping up liquor crates in saloons across the Midwest. In Boston, The American Society for the Promotion of Temperance, founded in 1826, urged trusted members of “respectable” classes to reform themselves and they relied on “moral suasions” as a method.

Methods In the International Social Movement, dedicated to the control of alcohol consumption through the promotion of moderation and abstinence. It began as a church-sponsored movement through the U.S. in the early 19 th century. Not just a political debate, temperance permeated American culture through tracts, dramas, the temperance conventions and parades that took place in many cities and towns. Barnum, a temperance advocate, promoted the cause of sobriety at eh Americana Museum in a variety of ways.

Goals The WCTU was and still trying to accomplish all of their goals. They hoped to obtain pledges of total abstinence from alcohol, and later also tobacco, and other drugs. But their biggest goal was alcohol. One of the first goals that the people supporting the temperance reform had to accomplish was grouping every one together because they believed that if they had more supporters, they could accomplish their goal. That there is power, in numbers.

Accomplishments The temperance movement of the 19 th century and early 20 th century was an organized effort. The movements ranks were mostly filled by women who, with their children, had endured the effects of unbridled drinking by many men. But by the 1840s, working class men joined the temperance reform by forming Washington Societies, and during the 1850s, supporters of the temperance reform got nine states to pass laws banning alcohol. The movement was interrupted by the Civil War but reemerged later.
