Acid Nomenclature Science 10 Chemical Reactions
Recognizing Acids Acids can be recognized from their formula: –An acid’s formula either starts with H or ends with COOH
Naming Acids If the negative ion ends in “-ide,” the acid is named as a “hydro ic” acid. Examples are hydrochloric acid, HCl, and hydrocyanic acid, HCN.
Naming Acids (cont’d) If the negative ion ends in “-ate”, the acid is named as a “ ic” acid. Examples are nitric acid, HNO 3, and sulphuric acid, H 2 SO 4.
Naming Acids (cont’d) If the negative ion ends in “-ite,” the acid is named as a “ ous” acid. Examples are sulphurous acid, H 2 SO 3, and nitrous acid, HNO 2.
Summary Negative Ion Ending Acid EndingExample -idehydro----ic acid hydrogen chloride = hydrochloric acid -ate-ic acid hydrogen sulphate = sulphuric acid -ite-ous acid hydrogen nitrite = nitrous acid
