Acid & Base Nomenclature Almost there!
How to recognize a compound/formula as being an acid or base: Acid: has H, hydrogen, at the beginning. - Can be H and one other element - Binary Acid - Can be H and a polyatomic ion - Ternary Acid Base: contains OH, hydroxide. - Metal and the hydroxide ion
Binary Acids Hydro + second element (Change ending to –ic) + acid HCl HF Your turn!
Ternary Acids If the polyatomic ion ends with –ate No prefix and change –ate ending to –ic + acid. HNO 3
Ternary Acids If the polyatomic ion ends with –ite No prefix and change –ite ending to –ous HNO
Acid Formulas Treated like ionic compounds (more on this later!) Get the charges H = +1 Then swap & drop!
