Biologists use classification to organize living things into groups.

The scientific study of how living things are classified is called taxonomy.

Aristotle grouped animals on the basis of how they moved or where they lived. He divided animals into three groups: those that fly, those that swim, and those that walk, crawl, or run.

Carolus Linnaeus developed an improved system that depended on grouping organisms on the basis of their observable features.
