Presentation transcript:

An intellectual movement in France and other parts of Europe that emphasized the importance of reason, progress, and liberty. The Enlightenment, sometimes called The Age of Reason, is primarily associated with nonfiction writing, such as essays and philosophical works. Major Enlightenment writers include Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Rene Descartes.

A Literary movement, inspired by the rediscovery of classical works of ancient Greece and Rome, that emphasized balance, restraint, and order. Neoclassicism roughly coincided with the Enlightenment, which stressed reason over passion. Notable Neoclassical writers include John Dryden, Samuel Johnson, Alexander Pope, and Jonathan Swift.

A Group of 17 th Century poets who combined direct language with ingenious images, paradoxes, and conceits. John Donne and Andrew Marvell are the best known poets of this school.

No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manner of thineown Or of thine friend's were. Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.
