Algae biodiesel 2 nd presentation by Zainab Usman Sali

Biodiesel Production Involves Two Process, Oil Extraction and Transesterification

Experimental design Equipment Algae Ethyl-acetate Beakers pipettes Tubing Hoe Press machine Filter paper

Procedure Oil extraction Harvest the algae and dry them Extract the oil using the oil press machine (algae contains large amount of lipids) Filter the oil to remove impurities Add ethyl acetate to the oil to undergo transesterification.

Transesterification

Tested. The world’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle to cross the US on fuel containing a blend of algae-based renewable gasoline. Currently (April 2012).

Expected results Algae-biodiesel has proven to be a cost effective and a sustainable method of fuel production Additional benefits include the creation of new jobs, a reduction of the facility’s dependence on fossil fuels which is harmful to the environment, and a reduction in the cost.

Cost Efficiency It was estimated that if gasoline is replaced with algae biofuel then people will be able to save more. Since 1 gallon of gasoline=$4 1 gallon of algae biofuel=$1.94 then people will be able to save $2.06
