Energy Crop Masaya Kakuichi

What is energy crop? An energy crop is a plant grown as a low cost and low maintenance harvest used to make biofuels, or combusted for its energy content to generate electricity or heat.

Advantages and disadvantages Advantages ・ Energy crops are always available and can be produced as a renewable resource. ・ Carbon Dioxide which is released when Biomass fuel is burned, is taken in by plants. = Carbon neutral Disadvantages ・ Biofuels have a lower energy output than traditional fuels. ・ As demand for food crops such as corn grows for biofuel production, it could also raise prices for necessary staple food crops. Carbon neutral

Kinds of energy crops Forestry : Eucalyptus, Poplar, Willow, Oil palm Herbaceous : Sugarcane, Switchgrass, Sorghum, Corn, Rapeseed Aquatic : Giant kelp, Water hyacinth, Algae etc. Switchgrass Willow Poplar

Main producer of energy crops Brazil: Sugarcane America: Corn, Switchgrass Germany: Rapeseed Thailand: Cassava India: Palm Japan: Willow etc.

How to use - Direct combustion Electricity Generating Plant Generating plant fuelled by biomass uses conventional steam turbine electricity generating plant as used in coal fired power stations with modifications to the combustion chamber and fuel handling systems to handle the bulkier fuel.

How to use - Conversion to chemical fuel Cellulosic ethanol is a biofuel produced from energy crops. Purpose: internal combustion Main producers: Brazil, U. S. Quantity ・ Corn : 2,800 L/ha ・ Sugarcane : 5,400 L/ha ・ Cassava : 2,900 L/ha etc. Brazil is the largest exporter of ethanol in the world. Transition of production of ethanol Ethanol exports of main producters

Conclusion Energy crop is... ・ Renewable energy ・ The alternatives to fossil fuel. ・ Carbon neutral
