2 Applications  Wind energy  Telecommunication  Utilities  Industry

3 Standards  Söll Vi-Go System: EN 353-1Guided type fall arresters including a rigid anchor line  Extension post: EN353-1Guided type fall arresters including a rigid anchor line EN 795Anchor devices – Requirements and testing

4 Legal foundations Requirements on personal protective equipment against falls from a height:  Must be tested from a notified body, e.g. “DEKRA EXAM”  CE-Certificate is required  Conformity licence is required  The shuttle and the ID plate of the system must be labelled with the identification number of the supervising notified body, e.g. “0158” for DEKRA EXAM

5 Further tests Tests carried out at TUV-NEL in March 2008  Researches showed that body posture at release can influence outcome of fall tests  Dummy of 100 kg mass

6 Further tests  4 tests with different fall postures

7 Further tests Results:  Shuttle locked onto the cable within max 55 mm  Dummy arrested in upright position  Probably relatively easy to effect self-recovery from positions  Satisfactory results

Further tests  Fall-back 8

Further tests  Crouch-back 9

Further tests  Feet first 10

Further tests  Climb position 11

General information  Cable guided vertical fall protection system  Retrofitting onto existing climbing devices possible, e.g. ladders & rungs  Very limited quantity of components easy to handle, move, store & install  Components partly available in stainless steel or hot-dip galvanized steel 12

General information  Maximum number of users: 8 persons  Maximum dynamic load in case of a fall: 6 kN plus 1 kN for every additional user  Upper cable anchor always has to be above the person to be secured 13

General information  Check, whether substructure can withstand the loads resulting from a fall (qualified engineer) For fastening upper end of cable, loads working vertically downwards: For fastening intermediate brackets and lower end of cable, effective load in each direction: F c2 = 1,5 kN Characteristic loads result from:dynamic loads due to a fall dead-weights of system components 14

Additional equipment In addition to the shuttle users must be equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE):  1 full body harness, tested as per EN 361 and equipped with a climbing attachment point  1 self-locking EN 362 compliant connector 15

System components 1 Shuttle 2 Cable tensioner 3 Rung clamp (Universal clamp) 4 Manual intermediate bracket 5 Automatic intermediate bracket 6 Steel cable 7 Cable end 8 Extension post

System components At least the following components must be used when installing the Söll Vi-Go system:  Cable tensioner  Cable  Shuttle 17

 True single hand operation quick & easy to use  Smooth & silent sliding no hand support required  Double action for unlocking  Spring operated – self locking  Miss use prevention – upside down is impossible safe & secure 18 Söll Vi-Go Shuttle

Söll Vi-Go Shuttle  Integrated self locking karabiner safe connection to harness  Each shuttle is equipped with a shock absorber  Effective shock in case of fall is reduced under 6 kN each user is protected  Integrated fall-indicator easy to inspect 19

20 Söll Vi-Go Shuttle  Made out of high grade stainless steel and aluminium long life with no corrosion  Very low maintenance required  Easy to repair reduced costs  Available with standard and swivel karabiner

21 Cable tensioner  Three functions integrated: tensioner, tension indicator & expansion equalizer easy to install compensates movements of structure  Stainless or galvanized steel components to adopt the system efficient to different applications

22 Universal clamp  Cable end fixing  Can be installed universally on all structures with the same part, e.g. hollow and angle sections easy to handle

23 Rung clamp  Rung clamp adjustable to different sizes of rungs flexible to install  Various elongated holes at varying distances from each other can be mounted on different ladders  From the top-end another system can start up to combine more systems

24 Intermediate brackets  Hold cable in position, prevent heavy movement  Intermediates can be installed on the rungs or other supporting structure  2 types of intermediate brackets to be passed automatically or manual

25 Intermediate brackets  Manual bracket: release cable before shuttle passes it cost-effective, can be retrofitted available for 8 mm, 10 mm and 3/8” cable  Automatic intermediates: shuttle passes without manual help comfortable, quicker climbing available for 8 mm and 3/8” cable  With automatic intermediates the cable can follow also curves

26 Extension post  Extend the cable over the ladder  Integrated single anchorage point for a safe platform access to attach a rescue device  Maximum 4 users, 1 person if used as single anchorage point Bottom clamp Additional clamps Square tube Material: galvanized steel Top assembly with cable end attachment point Cable Single anchorage point

27 Extension post  Extension post is tested with a static force of 22 kN when used as single anchorage point maximum anchorage force is 22 kN  All cable attachment points maintain a static force of 22 kN

28 Cable end parts Cable end parts can be done in 3 different ways:  Thimble cheap solution pre-assemblage available  Turn back loop easy & quick to adjust, no need to cut the cable exactly a heat shrink tube protects the ends  Swageless terminals for quick & flexible installations

29 Cables 3 types of steel cables available  Cable galvanized or stainless steel 8 mm (7 x 19) for all installation breaking load: 33,3 kN  Cable galvanized or stainless steel 10 mm (7 x 19) especially for Off shore applications breaking load: 52,1 kN  Cable galvanized or stainless steel 3/8” for US use

30 Advantages against competition  Shuttle with single-hand-operation, adoptable for 3 diameters of cable  Each Shuttle is equipped with a separate shock absorber no risk to climb a system with a single, damaged shock absorber on the top  No shock absorber on the wire required climbing check before use is easier and safer  Up to 8 users at the same time  High quality and corrosion resistant finishes

Installation  Maximum cable length: 200 m  Recommended fixing span for intermediates: 10 m for internal use 3 to 4 m for external use  Maximum inclination forward: 45°  At least 2 person are required to install the Söll Vi-Go system 31

Installation – Rung clamp  Recommended tightening torque for self- securing nuts:40 Nm for steel ladders 20 Nm for aluminium ladders 32

Installation – Universal clamps  Different options of mounting the universal clamps fit to various types of sections 33

Installation – Intermediate brackets  Installation on the rungs of the ladder  Manual intermediate can be retrofitted  Automatic intermediate: Ensure that cable passes through bracket, can’t be done after installing the cable ends 34

Installation – Cable tensioner  Attached between lower fastening point and lower cable end  Turn the turnbuckle clockwise to tension the cable (400 to 600 N) tension indicator lies between the MIN and MAX markings on the mounting plate 35

Installation – Extension post  Upper fastening point is fixed to the uppermost ladder rung, lower fastening point is fixed to fifth rung from the top  Distance between top rung and end of extension post: max 1310 mm 36

Installation – ID plate  ID plate has to be attached and clearly visible Söll Vi-GoType designation of the fall protection system EN 353-1:2002Reference to the European standard CE0158 Monitoring testing agency Reference for reading the instructions for use To be filled in by the installer:Year of manufacture Maximum number of users Installation number 37
