“I think that a review of the disbursement and awards summary would be helpful. Many are trying to integrate new software systems with PHEAA reconciliation and our fiscal people are asking about calculated disbursements versus adjusted disbursements.”

Jack and Jill Went Up the Hill…. …to Green University. Each began college during the Spring semester, enrolled for 12 credits, and received full-time State Grants. Jack – 12 credits – 9 regular, 3 remedial; passed the 9 regular credits Jill - 12 credits – 12 regular; passed 9 of the 12 regular credits Green U. checks progress after Spring so both were short by 3 credits. Both take a 3 credit Summer class to make up SAP. Can both retake the same class during the Summer that they failed during the Spring term – Jack, 3 credits remedial; Jill, 3 regular credits? If not, why not?

Jack Fell Down….. Jill is OK. The course she failed was a regular course counting toward her degree. Jack will need to take a regular course to make up those 3 credits even though the course that he failed was a remedial course. A remedial exception is an exception to the requirement that all credits for which a SG is received must count toward the student’s degree. It is for the term during which the SG was received only. If the student fails to meet the requirements for that term, then the makeup credits must also count toward the degree.

And Now Today’s Questions….

More Questions???? Contact State Grant and Special Programs staff: – , option 3, option 1 (a private number reserved for the use of financial aid administrators only) –

Along the Same Remedial Lines School B is reviewing a transcript from School A. The last award was a half-time award in Fall 2004 when the student attempted and completed 3 regular and 3 remedial credits. No remedial exception was reported by School A for that term. Can the remedial credits be counted toward the academic progress test?

Remedial Answer If School A did not report a remedial exception, then the assumption is that the credits were all “regular.” Therefore, the credits counted toward progress must also be “regular.” School B cannot count those 3 remedial credits.

To Pay or Not to Pay… Student enrolls at School A for the Spring semester and then withdraws after their refund period so School A retains the SG. The student then enrolls in School B which has a later Spring semester start date, so she is enrolled in School B during that same term but is ineligible for the SG since it has been kept by School A. The student completes 15 semester credits at School B but none at School A. Can School B’s transcript for the Spring semester be used as documentation of earned credits for progress for that term?
