By Susan Graham & Erica Hartwick In New Zealand

How does it affect New Zealand? What is dog breeding? Issues & benefits with dog breeding

What is an Accredited breeder? No Laws to stop profit breeding from happening How effective is the Animal welfare act

RESPONSIBLE BREEDING: Who provide the 5 freedoms at all times The Animal Welfare Dogs Code of Conduct minimum standards are met Educate new owners & ensure they are safe homes When the animals welfare is the main focus

SOME BENEFITS & PROBLEMS WITH RESPONSIBLE BREEDING Benefits:Issues: For the breeder: -Healthier Dogs & puppies - more likely to sell For the breeder : -More space, money and time required For the animals: -Has 5 Freedoms met -Well socialized -Physically and mentally fit -More likely to go to a good owner/home For the animals : None For the new owner: -A healthy, well socialised pet -Should mean lower future costs due to good hereditary lines in breed For the new owner: - Restrictions on what they can do with their pet (i.e. showing / breeding)

PROFIT BREEDING Puppy mills and farms When the animals welfare is mistreated, and the main focus is only profit, low costs to raise puppies and continual breeding Loss of 5 freedoms Females repeatedly bred Physical and negligent abuse Sell through pet stores to be purchased by uneducated customers Puppies weaned from mothers too young

Benefits:Issues: For the breeder: -Need less room, time & attention -More productive -Sells to pet stores -Cost effective For the breeder: - Puppies may be rejected For the animals: - None For the animals: - Does not have the 5 freedoms met - Unhealthy dogs leads to unhealthy puppies - Unable to be natural - Could be cross bred - If puppies are rejected they could be put down For the new owner: -More chance of finding the breed they are after at any time For the new owner: - Unsocialized, nervous pet - Unhealthy pet meaning expensive vet bills - Often don’t know puppies breeding and background

* Responsible buying Buy from shelters not pet stores eg. SPCA, HUHA * Do your research Meet the breeder Check out location Find out breeding history/parents/hereditary disease etc * Buying puppies at right age Buying puppies under 8 weeks of age can indicate the puppy has been weaned too early and this can affect the future health of your dog.
