Chapter 4

Natural Resources Natural Resources are materials found in nature that people can use.

Water is a natural resource.

Soil is a natural resource.

Trees are a natural resource.

Oil Natural Gas

 Scarcity is a shortage of something, not enough to meet people’s needs.

 Abundant means a large supply, more than enough.

 Natural Resources are materials found in nature that people can use.

 Conserve means to use carefully.

Jennings, Louisiana In 1902 a rice farmer in Jennings found oil beneath his land.

 Offshore rigs

 Cardinal Directions are North, South, East, and West.

 Intermediate Directions are directions in the middle of two cardinal directions.

 In the 1860s Edmund Mcilhenny grew hot peppers in Avery island using rich soil.

 Avery Island is a salt dome located in southern Louisiana.

Salt Salt is an example of an abundant natural resource.

 Edmund Mcilhenny grew hot peppers and mixed them with salt from Avery Island to make hot sauce.

The geography of Avery Island helps the economy of Louisiana because of the salt and peppers.

 Wildlife refuges and zoos help protect wildlife.

 A wildlife is animals and plants that live in the wild.

Tensas National Wildlife Refuge is a place in Northwestern Louisiana that protects wildlife.

 Erosion is a danger to Louisiana’s coast.

 Erosion is the wearing away of land by water, wind, and other natural resources.

 The Gulf of Mexico’s waters are washing away the soil of the coastal wetlands.

 People plant dune plants to help keep the soil from washing away on Louisiana’s beaches.
