Running Out of Time Chapters 9-12 RL 5.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text.

intent She crowded forward, pretending to be very intent on Mrs. Spurning’s explanation of how vital a blacksmith was to an 1840s community. What words help us decide the meaning of the word? Intent- having the mind fixed; earnest.

glowered Jessie glowered. Primitive culture! She would like to see Mrs. Spurning work like Ma or any other woman in Clifton. Glowered-to look or stare with sullen annoyance or anger. Has anyone ever glowered at you? Why?

gravelly Then it would make a gravelly noise-like some dying animal gasping for air- and speed up. Gravelly-having a harsh scratchy sound Read the advertisement below. The 4" Jackrabbit produces the loud gravelly sounds of a jackrabbit in distress. Call even in high winds and extend your range to over a mile. Natural wood gives the clear, natural sound. Extremely effective on all predators.

grand Determine the meaning of the following word: Were these limousines or just regular cars? Whatever they were, Jessie decided they were grand. Grand-large and striking in size, scope, extent; intended to impress.

fretting If she had a mile or more to walk, she wasn’t going to walk the whole way fretting. Fretting-to become vexed or worried. When was there a time that you have fretted about something?

intricate Jessie could see the intricate twists of strong metal that would take years for Pa to make. What text clues help you figure out the meaning of this word? Intricate-having many complexly interrelating parts or elements; complicated.

nonsensical Determine the meaning of the following word. The riddles always sounded ridiculous, nonsensical, as though they could have no right answer. Nonsensical-foolish or meaningless words or actions.

conjured Now Jessie bit her lip, wishing she hadn’t conjured up such a memory. What words help us decide the meaning of the word? Conjured-to call forth; to produce as if by magic. Example: Her imagination conjured up a splendid scene.

drone Distantly, she heard the drone of another car moving along the road from Clifton. How did you determine the meaning? Drone- to make a dull humming or buzzing sound.

gawked She waited for a car to leave, most curious about what happened then. Finally a big yellow one—one of the monster maybe limousines Jessie had gawked at earlier— roared down the road. Using context clues what do you think this word means? Gawked-to gape or stare stupidly.
