Is, by itself, a verb meaning “to thank” It is also a surname There are an estimated 2 million people with this name Most live in southern China It is a pictophonetic character: Its radical, 言 (yán) means word Shè, 射, gives a hint at its pronunciation It is most commonly repeated as 谢谢 …xièxie When it is xièxie, it means thank you The second xie is neutral tone To be more polite and exuberant, one can say 谢谢, 谢谢 (repeating the common expression)

谢谢 …xièxie – thank you 多谢 …duōxiè - many thanks 不用谢 …búyòng xiè – Don’t mention it. Also just 不谢 感谢 …g ă nxiè – (express) thanks/grateful 谢天谢地 …xiètiān-xièdì 谢绝 …xièjué – politely refuse 谢幕 …xièmù – answer a curtain call 协议 …xièyì – gratitude; thanks 谢罪 …xièzuì – apologize for an offense

Can also be li ă o, a verb to know and understand, to finish and conclude 亅 is the radical 现在几点了 … xiànzài jĭ di ă n le? What’s the time now? 太了 … tài le – extremely or too (much) Whatever is “extremely” comes between the tài and the le Therefore, 太好了, would translate to (That would be) extremely good. So…… What would be “too (extremely) expensive”? “Too big”? “Too many”? “Too tall”? “Too late”? “Too bright”?

Tomorrow I’ll go see a movie after I have eaten dinner. 我昨天看了 “ 木兰 ” 。 - Wŏ zuótiān kànle “Mùlán.” I saw Mulan yesterday. 你吃了吗 ? – Nĭ chīle ma? 你吃饭了没有 ? – Nĭ chī fànle méiyŏu? Have you eaten? 下雨了。 Xià yŭ le. It’s raining now.
