Creating a Class Mission Statement

Steps for Creating a Class Mission Statement This powerpoint will help you develop a mission statement for your individual classes. You are not required to develop a mission statement for your classes, but it may help your students take ownership of their role in the CCI process. Remember, you are required to post and share your department mission statement with your classes. 

Steps for Creating a Class Mission Statement As a class, you want to collaboratively develop a mission statement (with your students) that clearly identifies the following: Why are we here? What do we have to do well together? How will we make that happen?

Steps for Creating a Class Mission Statement First things first, have your students (either individually or in small groups) respond to the following questions using short phrases: WHAT should our class accomplish? WHAT do we have to do well together in our class? HOW will we make this happen?

Steps for Creating a Class Mission Statement Next, have your students share their responses and begin to identify common responses. Engage students in a discussion about their responses to narrow down the number of responses. Their buy-in is super important, BUT a good mission statement is only 20-30 words! 

Steps for Creating a Class Mission Statement Finally, start your mission with the following phrase, The mission of (teacher’s name) (input prep & class period) is to… Your class mission should be clear, concise and written in student-friendly language. Your mission should be 20-30 words total. Your mission statement will answer the following questions: WHAT should our class accomplish? WHAT do we have to do well together in our class? HOW will we make this happen?

Class Mission Statement Examples The mission of Mrs. Korman’s 3rd period Honor’s Chemistry class is to work together to master the expectations of Honor’s Chemistry. The mission of Ms. Saufley’s 5th period Systos 1-2 class is to work together to accomplish individual and class goals in a safe and respectful environment. The mission of Mr. Evan’s 1st period College Algebra class is to collaborate with peers and Mr. Evans to master the concepts of College Algebra.

Posting and Sharing your Class Mission Statement Student buy-in to the mission statement is very important—students should know that they are committing to upholding the mission and that you are committed to aligning class activities to the mission statement. You might want to have students sign the mission statement before you post the class mission statement. Refer to the mission often and be sure to share it with parents and other interested stakeholders. A class mission statement will go “above the line” but cannot replace your department mission statement.
