Reclaiming Clay

Why Reclaim Clay Good for the environment (avoiding landfill and extra mining of clay) Saves money

Safety First Work in good ventilation Wear a dusk mask when working with dry clay Wear goggles to protect your eyes when breaking up dry clay

How to Reclaim Dry Clay Break up dry clay with a hammer Put into a tub marked for that clay type Add water enough to cover Allow time to absorb water Put into the drying bat (plaster slab on the left side of clay room.)

How to Reclaim Wet Scraps Remove excess water on top to pre-wash tub (NOT THE SINK) Clean out clay mixer (left of clay room) Scoop clay scraps into mixer Label the clay type (put on mixer) Ask instructor to start mixer

Using the Clay Drying Bat Drying Bat is the plaster slab in clay room. When the water absorbed or mixed, scoop into the drying bat Label with clay type (cone) Cover the clay with lid/plastic Check daily to see if clay is ready.

Removing Clay from Bat When the clay is a bit soft or ready for use, remove from bat Put into correct tub marked for that clay type - very important Use white hard plastic cutting board to cut into the clay. DO NOT USE putty knifes or sharp edges that damage plaster.
