Chess began as a game in the Islamic empire. Its roots were thought to be from India. When when the Arab empire conquered India, the Arabs influenced chess all around the known world. Then when they conquered Spain chess was spread around Europe and eventually grew into the game we know today.

Backgammon was first originated under Roman rule in 400 B.C. Thought to be invented from games as early as 3000 B.C. It was also influenced from the Arabic empire.

The board game Tafl dates back to 400 A.D. It was played throughout Scandinavia, Iceland, Germany, England, Wales and Ireland. It remained popular until the 17th. century, when it was gradually supplanted by chess. Historical tafl boards could have anywhere from 49 (7X7) to 324 (18X18) cells or squares. The squares were sometimes checkered, while other boards had only the centre and corner squares distinguished.

The game was similar to chess with a mix of Chinese checkers. It was very popular until the 1600’s when chess took over as the popular game.

The story goes that a German archaeologist found it during the excavation of a Viking-era site, made himself a copy and created rules for it.
