Bye-bye!

Benjamin Franklin was a famous American scientist. In June 1752, he did a kite experiment to __________ that lightning and electricity were the same. He made a kite, which could __________lightning. The kite was made of______ so that it would not ________ too soon. He _________ a very sharp piece of metal and then _______ a key to the ________of the long string and finally he______ a silk _______ to the string, just _______the key. When a __________ appeared, he went to a _________in the field and flew the kite to the sky. Soon he saw the hairs on the string _________ ______ because the string got________. He brought his finger to the string and felt a light but clear _________ ___________. With the help of a key and a ___________,he was able to __________ a great deal of electricity. prove attract silk tear fixed fastened end tied ribbon above thunderstorm shed stand up charged electric shock condenser collect Fill in the blanksFill in the blanks.

 It is difficult to go and look for lightning  A kite made of paper won ’ t last long in rainy weather  A silk kite doesn ’ t attract lightning  He had to collect and store the electricity  He had to make sure that he would not be hit by the lightning  He had to stop the kite from flying away, without touching the string that would be charged with electricity  He had to direct the electricity towards the condenser  He waited for bad weather and attracted lightning by using a kite.  His kite was made of silk.  He fixed a sharp piece of metal to the top of the longer stick.  He used a condenser. ..  He used a small shed in the fields  He tied a silk ribbon to the string that he kept dry.  He tied a metal key to the end of the string.

After-class activities: 1. Describe Franklin’s kite experiment. 2. Describe the steps to make a fruit battery. 3.Search more scientists and their famous experiments. Share them! What do you think of Benjamin Franklin? What can you learn from him?

Discussion  Do you think Franklin ’ s experiment was dangerous?  List the difficulties that Franklin met when he was doing the kite experiment  How did Franklin solve these problems?

Summary In order to show that lightning and electricity are the same, Franklin built a strong kite. When the bad weather came, he did his experiment by using his kite and condenser. He found that the string was getting charged and he could feel a light but very clear electric shock. So he store much electricity in the condenser. This experiment proved his idea.

To do this experiment, four objects are needed :a kite,a key, some bad weather and a condenser. Then the next three steps are very important.First, fix a very sharp piece of metal. Second, fasten a key to the end of the long string.Third, tie a silk ribbon to the string.
