Sustainable Development

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. For humans it is the potential for long-term health and wellbeing, which in turn depends on the wellbeing of the natural world and the responsible use of natural resources. Sustainable development is “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” There are many definitions of sustainable development, but this is the one that is most frequently used. It contains two key concepts: Sustainable Development vs. Sustainability the concept of needs, in particular the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which…priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organisation on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.

Agenda 21 Section I: Social and Economic Dimensions Section II: Conservation and Management of Resources for Development Section III: Strengthening the Role of Major Groups Section IV: Means of Implementation

The Midrash and Natural Resources

What did you think of this clip? Was there anything that surprised you? What similarities are there between the …school in Tanzania and your school here? What differences are there?

Sustainable Communities “Development that meets the needs of the present without preventing future generations from meeting their needs” Brundtland Report (1987) When G-d created the first human beings, G-d led them around the Garden of Eden and said: “Look at my works! See how beautiful they are — how excellent! For your sake I created them all. See to it that you do not spoil and destroy My world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.” Kohelet Rabbah 7:13 What is the link between “not compromising future generations to meet their needs” and “…do not spoil and destroy My world; for if you do, there will be no one else to repair it.”?

A Sustainable Community…

Choose three rights: i) One children’s right that relates to sustainable development now ii) One children’s right that relates to how their actions impact poor children in the developing world today iii) One children’s right that relates to how their actions will impact on future generations

Explain why you agree or disagree that Jewish people should take action against extreme poverty. Why would loans be more effective than giving money as a gift? Consider the pros and cons of the methods Tzedek’s project adopt to help as opposed to handouts of resources such as food. Why do you think the project in Cameroon can be considered a sustainable development project?

Did anything surprise you? What areas create the most consumption? What do you think you could change? What are the areas of consumption that …affect the school?

Which ideas or values were the same in …your texts? What contradictions or difficulties did you …come across in your texts? What have you learnt about the Jewish …view on development aid? What have you learnt about sustainable …development?
