Syllable Patterns: Vowel Digraphs

Read the words below- Identify the vowel sound in each pair join/employ The letters oi and oy stand for the /oi/ sound in join fault/ dawned/taught The letters au, aw and aught can stand for the /Ô/ sound in fault

Find the vowel sound in these words town/ cloudy The letters ow and ou can stand for the /ow/sound in town. crew/blue/pool The letters ew, ue, and oo can stand for the /ōō/sound in crew pew/cue The letters ew and ue can stand for the /yōō/ sound in pew

Remember… The letter groups oi, oy, au, aw, ew, ue, oo are not broken apart. These letter groups stay together in a syllable. So, even if the syllable is closed (which would usually mean that the vowel would have a short sound) these syllables would still make the sounds we just discussed. We have learned to identify syllables, syllable patterns and vowel sounds because knowing them helps us pronounce unfamiliar words. If you’re not sure how to pronounce a word with one of the above sounds, then try pronouncing it with different vowel sounds and listen for a word you know.

IDENTIFY THE VOWEL SOUND IN EACH OF THE FOLLOWING WORDS. TELL WHERE IN THE CHART IT BELONGS. Try these.
