Chapter 3 How did Col. Lloyd treat his stable keepers? What incident does Douglass narrate to indicate why slaves often gave seemingly contented replies when asked about their treatment? What does Douglass think of the practice he describes of slaves fighting to defend the alleged virtues of their masters? To what psychological impulse does he attribute this?

Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Severity (n) – fact or condition of being severe Eminent (adj) – used to emphasize the presence of a positive quality Obdurate (adj) – stubbornly refusing to change one’s opinion or course of action Sparingly (adv) – marked by or practicing careful restraint Expedient (n) – a means of attaining an end, esp. one that is convenient but considered improper or immoral Consolation (n) – comfort received by a person after loss or disappointment Gratification (n) – pleasure; esp. when gained from the satisfaction of a desire Manifestation (n) – event, action, object that shows/embodies something; esp. theory or abstract idea Egotistical (adj) – excessively conceited or absorbed in oneself; self- centered Abhorrence (n) – feeling of repulsion; disgusting, loathing

Chapter 4 What violent events does this chapter record? Why do you think nothing was done to prosecute the murder of slaves? How would you describe Douglass’s style? How does he show emotion in recounting the horrible signs he has witnessed? I would describe my writing style as very formulaic; there isn’t much emotion in my words, but it does turn out extremely descriptive. I remember, when I was younger, I was very private with my thoughts and feelings; I never spoke to any one in my family about what was going on in my life. Whenever I wanted to express something to my mother, I would write it on a note and leave it on her bed.
