Case Study 3: Aqua-RET 2 Aqua-RET is a project focussing on Marine Renewable Energy Technologies Aqua-RET 1 (2006-8) set out to show the user, in straightforward steps, how these technologies work (Run of River, Tidal Impoundment, Tidal Stream, Wave and Offshore Wind) Aqua-RET 1 Deliverables: E-learning Tool available online and CDROM available in English, Greek, Romanian and Portuguese 5 Technology Posters available in English, Greek, Romanian and Portuguese Interactive graphics

Aims and Objectives of Aqua-RET 2: 1 ) to identify the labour market needs of the marine renewable sector and ancillary businesses 2) to select, adapt and further develop existing material from Aqua-RET 1 3) to design and pilot new training programmes 4) to facilitate the transfer of skills from ancillary sectors to the marine renewables sector

Case Study 4 - MarineTT Type of funding scheme: Coordination and Support actions (supporting) Work programme topics addressed: ENV Knowledge transfer and uptake of EU-research results Funded: 2 nd out of 15 applications under this call Partners: AquaTT & EUROCEAN Budget: ~€950,000 Duration: 24m

Justification The European Union (EU) 6th Framework Programme ( ) funded 458 marine research projects worth more than €848 million in grant-aid 124 marine research projects (grant-aid €297 million) funded under the FP7 (2007 – 2013) to date. Although research effort is significant, not all of the new knowledge has had the expected impact, perhaps because of the “well-known obstacles impeding knowledge transfer between research institutions and third parties”* *‘Improving knowledge transfer between research institutions and industry across Europe’ (Com (2007) 182 final).

KM Challenge cultural differences between the business and science communities; lack of incentives; legal barriers; fragmented markets for knowledge and technology Ref: Improving knowledge transfer between research institutions and industry across Europe: embracing open innovation – Implementing the Lisbon agenda (COM (2007) 182 final).

MarineTT Approach A change of focus from the promotion of research projects per se to singling out research outputs those end-users can adopt and/or exploit. The clustering and impartial assessment of knowledge potential The incorporation of sustainability factors in judging the benefit of knowledge exploitation to society (to ensure that economic growth does not result in environmental degradation) Analysis of the potential impact of transferring knowledge Measuring the impact of any knowledge transferred;

AquaTT Summary AquaTT, an experienced knowledge management partner; dissemination of information and results from EU research and technological development (RTD) programmes; E-newsletters on latest EU developments in education and training; development of vocational training methodology and resources; coordination of thematic networks; sector-specific surveys; end user training courses & workshops; Effective Stakeholder consultation needs analysis; glossaries and multilingual teaching materials; online training materials and courses

Case Study 3: VALLA VALLA will develop and pilot methods of recognising and accrediting lifelong learning in the aquaculture sector via the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) European aquaculture is a fast-growing innovative industry, its success relying on a joint practical and theoretical knowledge base Knowledge acquired through training (work placements, on-the-job training, and short-term learning courses etc.) falls outside current credit systems EQF links national qualifications systems, acting as a translation device to make qualifications more readable (8 levels defined through learning outcomes – knowledge, skills and competence)

 Using best practice Module/Course Unit Learning Outcome Knowledge & Skills Competences Evidence Required Assessment Other Information Learning Outcome Unit

VALLA is building a prototype online tool for evaluating and validating short- term training Step by step tool to gather and organise the necessary information to describe a module/course in terms of units Users can publish and obtain a “complete” module description to define course/ workshop/ placement training Users will obtain a range of administrator tools and a private repository for their courses Modules described in this “common language” can be assessed and possibly credited within existing systems
