REGIONAL GOAL NATIONAL GOAL COUNCIL FUNCTIONS To raise the status of teaching and enable free movement of teachers in the Caribbean Region To attract high achievers to join and remain in the teaching profession Promoting teaching as a profession by: developing strategies for attracting and retaining suitably qualified persons developing a marketing and information package on careers in teaching promoting a teacher career awareness programme at all levels of the system developing guidelines for recruitment and initial professional education of career changers organizing lectures, and conferences related to teaching and learning publishing newsletters, research reports, maintaining a web site

Appropriate and adequate preparation of teachers and school administrators Establishing the framework for standardizing pre-service programmes in the region Developing guidelines for the criteria and procedures for selection of prospective teachers and administrators Developing guidelines for a development programmme for prospective teacher educators

Appropriate and adequate preparation of teachers and school administrators Establishing entry- level criteria for teaching at all levels of the school system, and for departments of teacher education. Developing guidelines for monitoring standards in programmes of preparation for teachers and for school administrators Providing guidelines for the accreditation of programmes of teacher preparation i.e. initial teacher education, and those for preparing teacher educators and school administrators

Support for the professional growth and development of teachers Developing guidelines for establishing and managing a support system for classroom teachers, including an induction programme for new/entry-level teachers.
