A PARENT’S GUIDE TO INTERNET SAFETY KEEPING YOUR CHILD SAFE

Questions about my child….  What are they doing online?  Who are they talking with?  Why do they want to be there?  When should I restrict time?  Where can I learn about digizens?

 Students are using the sites above to CONNECT with kids all over the world  The information they place on these sites are used daily by pedophiles  Never post full name, address, telephone number, SS #. MY SPACE.COM FACEBOOK.COM

Bank robber arrested after boasting of crime on MySpace Investigators learned that Mr. Northington, who had a gunshot scar on his face, used MySpace, to brag about a crime. There they found that he had posted a message mentioning the robbery: "One in the head still ain't dead!!!!!! On tha run for robbin a bank Love all of yall." According to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice in Columbia, S.C

Nine days later, Northington was arrested in Virginia. Northington is now facing a fine of $250,000 and imprisonment for a minimum of seven years and a maximum of life. By Thursday, Northington's MySpace page was still up with the status reading "Wanted."

WHAT CAN Parents DO?  Have a Family Internet Plan/Agreement  Use Facebook.  Friend your child.  Teachable moments from other users.  Place computer in a Central Location.

TEACH THE CONTROLS  Use Privacy settings. –School admissions officers –Future employers  View online info with a critical eye.  Fun Questionnaires aren’t funny.

CYBER BULLYING Each and every student will be a safe and informed Internet user.

The Statistics:  1 in 5 children are sexually solicited or approached over the internet in a one-year period. (Online Victimization: A Report on the Nation’s Youth)  20% of violent offenders serving time in state prisons reported having victimized a child online. (U.S.Dept of justice.)

YOU HAVE HELP  No matter if a threat was written at home or not, Police and/or Schools can take action  Isolate the computer  Inform local law authorities  Call MCCTF, (Maine Computer Crimes Task Force)  Call Federal Agencies – FBI has a Maine office that works mainly with hate crimes, civil rights issues in schools
