CONTENTS Transport challenges Initiatives to address transport challenges Elements of Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN) Elements of Intelligent transport Systems (ITS) Benefits of transport initiatives Progress to date Opportunities for private sector involvement
TRANSPORT CHALLENGES Traffic congestion causing delays, increased user costs, fuel consumption, accidents and deterring investment Overcrowded Public Transport (PT) facilities PT Modes not coordinated and integrated Over-reliance on private transport Irregular parking and loading Inadequate pedestrian and bicycle facilities Lack of CoT funding
INITIATIVES TO ADDRESS TRANSPORT CHALLENGES Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan (CITP) Integrated Public Transport Network (IPTN) Intelligent Transport System (ITS): –Urban Traffic Control (dynamic computer control of traffic signals from Central Control Centre) –Advanced Traffic Management –Parking Management –Advanced PT Management (automated fare collection and real-time passenger information)
ELEMENTS OF IPTN Integration of all PT modes, routes and services Dedicated public transport lanes for trunk services entering the CBD from outer areas Inner-city distribution system using smaller vehicles accessing final destinations from trunk services, such as BRT and Train Integrated ticketing Integrated PT facilities providing efficient modal transfers Transit malls – dedicated road reserve for public transport and pedestrians Pedestrian and Bicycle facilities
ELEMENTS OF ITS Advanced traffic management providing for efficient and safe movement of vehicles Coordinating of traffic signals Incident management to clear accident scenes quickly Parking management optimising the utilisation of parking space and limiting search time for parking Advanced PT management providing priority for PT at traffic signals, real-time passenger information, and security (CCTV cameras) Automated Fare Collection using smart cards paying for all PT services and parking eg. Gautrain Gold Card Integrated Traffic and PT Control Centre

BENEFITS OF TRANSPORT INITIATIVES Reduction in travel time and providing efficient and easy access to various employment, retail, business, social and tourist activities in inner city Reduction in user costs to access inner-city Reducing traffic accidents and minimise impact of accidents on traffic and pedestrian flow Reduce carbon foot-print of inner-city transport and fuel consumption Make inner-city pedestrian and cycling friendly as well as for people who are physically challenged These initiatives will lay the foundation for the revival of inner- city and attracting businesses back to the CBD
PROGRESS TO DATE Update of CITP, which will also include IPTN – tender process near completion PMU of IRPTN appointed and dedicated project office in process to be procured and equipped IRPTN planning in process: –Transport Demand and Financial Models developed –New route to Soshanguve/Mabopane planned and prelim design in progress –Route to Mamelodi via Sunnyside and Hatfield being planned

OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIVATE SECTOR INVOLVEMENT BRT provides many opportunities: Bus operator concession, financial entity handling ticketing and cash flows, facility management of BRT stations, Advanced PT management system and operations Provision and operation of inner-city distribution system Transit Orientated Development (TOD) around PT modal interchanges where development, facilities management of PT facility is combined with development of commercial property
OPPORTUNITIES FOR PRIVATE SECTOR INVOLVEMENT Development opportunities around major modal transfer stations with funding from value capture – property values already increased around Gautrain stations Facility Management of PT facilities Bike-rental schemes – examples Nantes, Amsterdam, London Provision and operation of Para-transit services i.e. Dial-a- Ride (Dynamic scheduling of small passenger vehicles combining trips with common origins and destination) UTC development and Operations: As turn-key solution or elements of the system
