Old Surgical Hospital from the mid-19th century The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh was established in 1729 and it is the oldest voluntary hospital in Scotland In 1832 a surgical hospital was added The surgical hospital was rebuilt in 1853 The Infirmary had public baths In 1879 the infirmary moved to a new location, at the edge of the city In 1948, the infirmary was incorporated into the National Health Service (NHS) Over the years it has maintained close ties to the University of Edinburgh

View o f the whole Hospit al Main entrance Nowadays Hospital In August 1998 a contract was signed to build a new Royal Infirmary at Little France in the south-east of the city The fact that it serves not just Edinburgh, but also Midlothian and East Lothian makes it a central focus for Edinburgh and its surroundings

An emergency department (ED), also known as A ccident & E mergency (A&E) Access for ambulances It´s a medical treatment facility specialising in acute care of patients who present without prior appointment, either by their own means or by ambulance

Scottish a mbulance

T he department must provide initial treatment for a broad spectrum of illnesses and injuries, some of which may be life-threatening and require immediate attention The emergency department operates 24 hours a day The ward is centralized workspace of doctors and nurses with many smaller examin ation cubicles In these rooms the patients are treated and examine and could be set to a operating theatre Every room is equipped with different device for specialized examin ation (x-rays, ultrasound, etc)

In A&E is trauma team which is ready to support paramedics in any accident The team includes doctors and nurses (in every ambulance are only 2 paramedics) This is very similar to Randez-vous system in the Czech Republic
