A diverse group of stakeholders: the school’s principal and parents, teachers, support staff, students*, and community members serving in an advisory role supporting the school’s improvement. *students only serve in secondary schools: required for high school & technical schools; optional in middle schools Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

A majority of the members of each school advisory council must not be employed by the school district. The Principal, teachers and support staff are the SAC members who are employees of the district; they must be less than 50% of the membership. Parents and community members are not employees of the school district in any position or capacity; they are at least 51% of the membership. Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

The teachers, support staff, students, parents, and community members on the SAC must represent (within 10%) the ethnic, racial, & economic groups in school’s community (student enrollment). Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

Teachers, support staff, students, and parents are elected by their groups at the school in a fair and equitable manner 1. Teachers elect teachers 2. Support staff elect support staff 3. Students elect students 4. Parents elect parents Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

SAC membership drives include public notices. School leaders distribute nomination requests to members of each group: Parents, teachers, students. The Principal appoints community members; SAC votes to approve the appointments. Electing alternates during the election process helps replace members in a timely manner and increase public participation. Records of the notices, nominations, and voting, are important documentation to retain. Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

Many stakeholders may be SAC participants in meetings/discussions who are not voting members. Public support for school leaders, teachers, staff and students in the school improvement process is valuable to the students and the community. Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

The SAC assists school’s leadership with  Annual evaluation of the schools’ improvement (review school report card)  Annual preparation & approval of the school improvement plan  Evaluation of improvement progress during the year (quarterly reviews are typical)  The annual school budget Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

The SAC  Determines & approves the use of SAC funds, a portion of which are to be used to implement the school improvement plan  Reaches agreement with staff and approves the use of the A+ Recognition funds (if awarded) Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

School Improvement Funds  The state auditor advises that school improvement funds should be spent in the year awarded to improve the school for the students enrolled in the year of award A+ Recognition Funds  Florida statute designates what Recognition Funds may be used for in the year awarded Next slide Previous slide First slide End Show

Fund use determined jointly by staff and SAC: a) Nonrecurring bonuses to faculty and staff; b) Nonrecurring expenditures for educational equipment or materials; (and/or) c) Temporary school personnel to maintain and improve student performance If staff and SAC cannot agree by February 1, funds are equally distributed to all classroom teachers currently teaching in the school.
