Step Up To Writing Compiled by Beth Miller

Elements of Expository Writing Organization is the key. Topic sentences and thesis statements are the heart. Transitions are the glue for the key ideas. Examples, evidence, and explanations are the meat. Conclusions tie it all together.

Background Topic Sentence Details, Reasons, Facts Examples, Evidence, Elaboration Conclusion Step Up to Writing

Background It is a “hook” or “grabber” that gets the reader’s attention. The background educates or entertains the reader.

Topic Sentence Green means “go.” Green asks the writer to decide: “What am I going to prove?” “What information will I share?” “What am I going to explain?”

Reasons, Details & Facts Introduce key concepts to support the topic sentence. Yellow means “slow down.”

Examples, Evidence & Elaboration Provide explanation and examples. Red means “stop and explain.” Present evidence.

Conclusion Use synonyms and leave your reader with something to remember. Green means “go back to your topic.” Restate the topic and the position. Do not introduce new information.

-summertime Step 1: Construct Informal Outline Conclusion=Benefits of being a great swimmer Social reasons -help yourself Safety reasons -save others -parties -vacations Topic=Why I should learn to swim

Step 2: Convert Outline to Sentences One reason to learn to be a strong swimmer is safety. Title=Reasons for Learning to Swim Being able to spend time with others is another reason for learning to swim. Learning to swim is an essential skill for all children. If you are in a dangerous situation, such as in a sinking raft or boat, you can swim to shore. Learning to be a great swimmer can clearly make your life safer and more enjoyable. If you are a good swimmer, you can also help save others who may be drowning. Birthday and school year-end parties are often located around the pool. Many people plan their vacations for warmer climates so that happy hours may be spent splashing in the ocean. The heat of summer makes us all want to cool off by enjoying water sports, such as water skiing, diving, and surfing.
