Jan. 6, 2014  S-Sit and organize materials for the lesson… Get your journal, Springboard book and a sharpened pencil.  E-Examine and follow teacher’s directions… On your next blank page, write today’s date at the top. Title this page ~ Percent of a Number  T-Take the challenge! Write the CQ in journal below the title: Challenge Question: What are the 2 methods to find percent of a number? SET-UP (Activate Prior Knowledge & Connect to Challenge Question) Noise level 0

Method 1: Create a Proportion Part Whole100 % Example: What is 15% of 150? PRESENTATION X Cross multiply and Solve: 100x = 150 ● x = X = 22.5

PRESENTATION Method 2: Change the % to a decimal (move it 2 places to the left) and multiply the number by the decimal form. Example: What is 15% of 150? (1) Change the % to a decimal… move it 2 places to the left. 15% =.15 (2) Multiply the number by the decimal form. 150 x.15 = 22.5 Reminder: Multiply like whole numbers then put the decimal back in

1.In a survey, 120 people were asked if they could swim. If 85% said they could, how many of the people could swim? 2.Beth hits 35% of her times at bat. During the season she was up to bat 80 times. How many hits did she have? 3.In a survey, 75% of 400 parents said they give their children fruit as a snack. How many parents of those surveyed is this? 4.The basketball team won 21 games. This is 25% of the games they played. How many total games did the team play? 5.Kathy has picked 9 ears of corn. This is 18% of the number of ears she needs. How many ears of corn does she need? 6.Of the 300 senior students, 252 have their driver’s licenses. What percent of the seniors have their licenses? Learning Together How long do we have to complete the activity: 25 mins What do we do? With a partner, use your notes to evaluate the following 6 problems. We will go over the correct answers in 25 mins.

In a survey, 120 people were asked if they could swim. If 85% said they could, how many of the people could swim? (When it gives me the total number and the percent, I prefer Method 2… it takes less time and is less math!!) (1) 85% =.85 (2) 120 x.85 = 102 people Learning Together

Beth hits 35% of her times at bat. During the season she was up to bat 80 times. How many hits did she have? (1) 35% =.35 (2) 80 x.35 = 28 hits Learning Together

In a survey, 75% of 400 parents said they give their children fruit as a snack. How many parents of those surveyed is this? (1)75% =.75 (2)400 x.75 = 300 parents Learning Together

The basketball team won 21 games. This is 25% of the games they played. How many total games did the team play? (When it doesn’t give me the total number, I prefer Method 1… it takes a little more time but ensures that I do the math correctly!!) Learning Together X 25 25X = X = 84 games

Kathy has picked 9 ears of corn. This is 18% of the number of ears she needs. How many ears of corn does she need? Learning Together 9 100X 18 18X = X = 50 ears of corn Did you notice that 9 x 2 = 18 so… 100 ÷ 2 = 50??

Of the 300 senior students, 252 have their driver’s licenses. What percent of the seniors have their licenses? (When it asks me to find percent, I prefer Method 1… it takes a little more time but ensures that I do the math correctly!!) Learning Together X 300X = X = 84% of seniors Did you notice that 300 ÷ 3 = 100 so… 252 ÷ 3 = 84??

Just For Me How long do I have to complete the activity: 25 mins What do I do? You will complete Lesson 11-1 Check Your Understanding on pg We will go over the correct answers in 25 minutes.

Assessment How long do I have to complete the activity: 20 mins What do I do? You will complete Lesson 11-1 Practice on pg This practice will help you prepare for the QUIZ at the beginning of class on Wednesday 1/8 over Percent of a Number. We will go over the correct answers at the beginning of class before the quiz. If you need help… come in for tutorials in the morning at 7:45 am.
