University of Macedonia Regional Development & Policy Research Unit Project objectives 1.To examine the consequences that European enlargement have had and will have upon the enterprise strategies in labour intensive industries. 2. To assess whether European enlargement will exacerbate inequality between, as well as, within regions dependent heavily upon labour-intensive industries 3. To identify instances of successful adjustment of enterprises and regions to the changing global environment. 4. To assess the appropriateness of existing policy initiatives and governance structures, at the European, national and regional level.

University of Macedonia Regional Development & Policy Research Unit What is the project about: 1.What are the implications of the transfer (delocalization) of labor- intensive segments of economic activities to other countries? Implications for both sending and receiving: - Countries / Regions / Firms 2.Whether the benefits for all parties concerned - (sending and receiving): countries, regions and firms - can be maximised? How? 3.Whether new EU members and the forthcoming new members are to be turned into the dustbins of Europe. 4.Do all countries/ regions/ firms in Europe have to move along the value chain so as to produce more value added products? Can they do so?

University of Macedonia Regional Development & Policy Research Unit 2. Theoretical framework: conceptual / methodological approach - Explain/ understand these flows through the notion of global chain analysis (Gereffi and others) or - “Networks” as analytical tool within the theoretical setting of institutional economics
