12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I said good-by to them and went on to Macedonia…

5 For when we came into Macedonia, this body of ours had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn—conflicts on the outside, fears within.

2 Corinthians 2:12-13…7:5! 12 Now when I went to Troas to preach the gospel of Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13 I still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother Titus there. 2 Corinthians 4: Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18 So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Fighting the Fight of Faith with an Eternal Perspective

Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 1. Don’t give up!

2 Corinthians 4:16a 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 1. Don’t give up!

2 Corinthians 4:1-6 1 Therefore, since through God’s mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. 2 Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. 3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

2 Corinthians 4:3-6 5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

2 Corinthians 4: But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

2 Corinthians 4: We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. 11 For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. 12 So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

2 Corinthians 4: It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. 15 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

Faith is a CURRENT ACTION trusting in a FUTURE HOPE based on a PAST REALITY!

Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 2. You are wasting away

2 Corinthians 4:16b 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 2. You are wasting away

Gru: Uh, question. What are these? Dr. Nefario: A dozen boogie robots. Boogie! Look at this! Watch me. Gru: Cookie robots! I said cookie robots! Ah, why... why are you so... old?

The battering Paul has taken in the service of Christ has left him the worse for wear and makes him a shamed figure in the eyes of the world. His deteriorating physical condition and shameful plight caused some in Corinth, who took account of such things, to wonder out loud about his power as an apostle. They may have assumed that God would do a better job of safeguarding and bringing honor to an authorized messenger of the gospel. Some in the ancient world interpreted affliction as a sign of god’s judgment and as something dishonorable. After surviving the shipwreck on the journey to Rome and landing safely on the island of Malta, the islanders were sure when they David Garland Dean of Tuett Seminary at Baylor University

saw a viper hanging from Paul’s hand that he must have been guilty of some great crime for which the gods were now belatedly punishing him. “Though he escaped from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live” (Acts 28:5). They expected him “to swell up or suddenly fall dead, but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god” (Acts 28:6). Like the Maltese islanders, some Corinthians were judging Paul only from outward appearances and from a wrongheaded view about how God works in this world and what God has in store for those who faithfully serve. ~ Garland, David. (2001). Vol. 29 : 2 Corinthians. pp 240–241. David Garland Dean of Tuett Seminary at Baylor University

Paul was: “squeezed but not squashed; bewildered but not befuddled; pursued but not abandoned; knocked down but not knocked out.” ~ 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 paraphrase by R. Kent Hughes

Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 3. You are being renewed every day

2 Corinthians 4:16c 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 3. You are being renewed every day

Colossians 3: Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 4. Our troubles are working toward making glory

2 Corinthians 4:17 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 4. Our troubles are working toward making glory

World record log lift, 210 kgs (463 pounds)

Romans 8: I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 The creation waits in eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20 For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.

Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 5. Fixing our eyes on the prize.

2 Corinthians 4:18 16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Fighting with an Eternal Perspective 5. Fixing our eyes on the prize.

DON’T LOOK DOWN!!

Philippians 3: But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.

Philippians 3: I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
