Contour Line

Contour Line is the line which defines a form or edge - an outline with other major lines. Contour drawing is the place where most artists start, following the visible edges of a shape. The contour describes the outermost edges of a form, as well as dramatic changes of plane within the form.

Continuous Contour – When you never lift your mark- making utensil.

Contour is the basis for drawing and sculpting Form.

Blind Contour – Is creating contour by only looking at the object and only your paper once you have finished drawing the entire object.

IN CLASS: Look at the different items on your table. DO NOT TOUCH OR MOVE THEM. IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK… Draw the contours (major lines) of each item separately. Be sure to draw them ½ page or LARGER. And don’t forget today’s DATE!!!

HOMEWORK: Pick 5 (FIVE) items from around your house/bed room, etc. They should be an interesting shape. NOT a plain bottle, book, or ball, etc. IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK… Draw a contour of each. They should each have their own page. Label each item. (Tell me what it is) And put today’s DATE on the page.

YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Look at your shoes, book bag, purse OR supplies and concentrate on the contours (major lines). IGNORE EVERYTHING ELSE! Draw the contours the way you see them, not how you think they should look. Remember to FILL THE SPACE of the paper.
