Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Challenges and Trends The travel and tourism industry will be confronted with numerous new challenges and trends in the future …..

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Political Challenges and Trends  Increased number of politically instable countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa: -Destination image based on safety will be increasingly important. -Peace, security, and political stability become more and more fundamental requirements/ preconditions for tourism. -More fluctuation in demand and demand shifts. -Tourism investors need to decrease perceived risks. -Increased fuel costs of travel.

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Social Challenges and Trends  Distinction between work and leisure will blur.  Demographic changes and ageing effects will have substantial implications for tourism flows.  An increasing world population, with improved health for older persons, will imply more potential travellers.  Society will become more feminised: More women friendly workplaces, increasing influence of women on decision making (incl. travel choice).  Changing work patterns allow for more flexibility of travel plans.  Worldwide trend towards urbanisation, managing huge cities will be a significant new problem.

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Social Challenges and Trends  Changing values and lifestyles influence increasingly consumer respectively tourist characteristics and habits: -Money rich and time poor -Hedonistic and individualistic -Quality conscious -Seeking authentic tourism experiences -Seek value for money, not necessarily low prices -More critical -Increased social and environmental consciousness -Increasing ethical consumption

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Market and Economic Challenges and Trends  The number of international arrivals worldwide will increase to almost 1.6 billion in 2020 (UNWTO).  Long-haul travel is forecast to grow at an average annual rate of 5.4%, while intraregional travel increases at a rate of 3.8% a year (UNWTO).  Many emerging destinations, such as Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.  Important new origin markets, such as China, Russian Federation and India.

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Market and Economic Challenges and Trends  Increased global competition from international tourist destinations.  Continuing liberalisation and deregulation (e.g. in the transport sector or between destinations).  New communication technologies: -stimulate new and unprecedented interactive relationships -Impart tourists more power and influence on the product  Further demand driven product development by niche operators.

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Environmental Challenges and Trends  Climate change -Rising sea levels -Warmer and wetter winters (lack of snow) -Warmer and drier summers (heat stress)  Loss of biodiversity -Continuous habitat and species loss hamper nature based tourism forms extremely  Natural resources depletion -More water-stressed destinations, water shortage and conflicts -Increasing land-use conflicts -New energy concepts will be required beyond fossil-fuel based energy sources

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Challenges and Trends Tourism can be at the same time offender, victim or beneficiary of political, economic, social or environmental impacts. Further uncontrolled tourism development, rapid and unlimited growth or short-term realization of profits can not be the answer of the travel and tourism sector to the upcoming global trends and challenges. We have to RETHINK tourism towards long-term visions and sustainable strategies!

Eng. Matthias Beyer, May 2011 / © mas|contour Challenges and Trends Destination Level Business Level  Feasibility studies  Carrying capacities  Investment and incentives based on sustainable minimum standards  Tourism as instrument for poverty reduction  Strengthening regional economic cycles for value creation  Security and risk management strategies  Effective short-term mitigation and long-term adaptation strategies  Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Strategies  More energy efficiency; investment in renewable forms of energy and other technical innovations  Extending horizontal and vertical value chain links  Training and education programmes to encourage staff towards sustainability  Demand driven product policy Awareness raising Multistakeholder dialogues Long-term vision Professional destination management
