LESSON 18 CONNECTIONS 3.Before Brian and Maria got married, they signed an agreement stating how they would divide their property if they ever got divorced. What does such an arrangement say about their view of marriage? They didn’t view marriage as a lifelong commitment between two people.

NEW TESTAMENT BOOKS OF THE BIBLE – PART 1 Matthew ActsGalatians Mark RomansEphesians Luke 1 & 2 Corinthians Philippians JohnColossians

LESSON 19 CONNECTIONS 1.Why is our choice of clothing important in helping others avoid committing adultery? Clothing that shows too much of the body or that draws attention to parts of the body can lead others to lust.

LESSON 19 CONNECTIONS 2.How was Joseph able to resist when Potiphar’s wife tried to tempt him. His love and respect for God and his will helped him resist.

LESSON 19 CONNECTIONS 3.How is it possible to commit adultery with our words? By indecent conversation, jokes about sex, discussions about immoral acts, or talking about anything that produces sexual thoughts or desires.

LESSON 19 CONNECTIONS 4.Kristen and Jared are engaged to get married in six months. Paying rent for two separate apartments is expensive. Since they are getting married anyway, they decided to move in together now to save money. Evaluate their choice. They aren’t married yet, so they are sinning against God by living together. They are putting their desire to save money above God.

Hebrews 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

THE 6 TH COMMANDMENT: A PURE AND DECENT LIFE Lesson 20 Faith Foundations Course One

WHAT DOES GOD COMMAND IN THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT?

IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES 1.In Romans 13:13-14, God commands us to behave decently. In order to do that, what must we avoid? Orgies, drunkenness, sexual immorality, debauchery, dissension, and jealousy.

IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES 2.The key to avoiding those sins is to clothe ourselves with Christ. What does that mean? To believe in Christ and use him as our model to resist temptation.

IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES 3.In the following verses, what help does God give for avoiding temptation? a. Matthew 26:41 Focus on God through prayer, and ask him for strength to resist temptation.

IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES 3.In the following verses, what help does God give for avoiding temptation? b. Philippians 4:8 Always think about holy, wholesome things to keep our minds from thinking about sinful stuff.

IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES 4. James 1:14,15 speaks about the way sin develops. What reason do we find in these verses for not watching TV shows that portray adultery as a normal lifestyle? By seeing it so often on TV, we may get so used to it that when that temptation comes our way, we give in too easily.

IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES 5.Read 1 Corinthians 6:18,19. What help does this passage give us to keep from falling into sins of immorality? Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. We don’t want to make God’s temple dirty by committing the sin of adultery.

IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES 6.John is ashamed of reading dirty jokes. Psalm 51:10 points to one thing that can keep our sinful natures from destroying us: God must create clean hears within us. How does he do that? He strengthens our faith every time we hear his Word.

KEY POINT #1 God commands us… to lead pure and decent lives.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 7.Read Ephesians 5:1-4, What example does God give us to show how we are to live within marriage? Just as Christ loved the church, we are to love our spouses.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 8.How did Christ show his love for us? He loved us so much he was willing to sacrifice himself.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 9.Like Christ, what will husbands be willing to do? Give up everything, even their lives, for their families.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 10. Submit is a key word that describes a healthy relationship between husbands and wives. It means each person gives up his or her own rights for the other’s. As these verses show, Jesus is our example, submitting for us. How did he do that? Jesus willingly gave up his position in heaven to become one of us. He gave up his own life so we could live eternally.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 11.What special reason does God give for wives to submit to husbands in verse 23? The husband is her head.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 12.The husband leads by putting his life and desires second to the well-being of the family. How did Mr. Mackenzie show himself to be that kind of a leader? He was willing to give up a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity because it was better for his family to stay where they were.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 13.Tell whether or not each of the following statements demonstrates an example of spouses who love, honor, and submit to each other. Explain your answer. a. I think marriage is a 50/50 proposition. I’ll do half and my spouse can do the rest. No. A loving spouse is willing to give 100%.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 13.Tell whether or not each of the following statements demonstrates an example of spouses who love, honor, and submit to each other. Explain your answer. b. I like doing little things for my husband, especially if he doesn’t know I did them for him. Yes. She is sacrificing her time and money to make her husband happy.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 13.Tell whether or not each of the following statements demonstrates an example of spouses who love, honor, and submit to each other. Explain your answer. c. When my wife is sick or feeling low, I share her burden by helping her, sometimes just by listening and being there for her. Yes. He is trying to be a blessing to his wife.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 13.Tell whether or not each of the following statements demonstrates an example of spouses who love, honor, and submit to each other. Explain your answer. d. Last week he bought a fishing boat without asking me, so today I bought new bedroom furniture without asking him. No. Neither is showing respect and concern for the other.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 13.Tell whether or not each of the following statements demonstrates an example of spouses who love, honor, and submit to each other. Explain your answer. e. I don’t always agree with my spouse, but I respect him because he is the head God has given to our family. We talk over our differences of opinion. Yes. She is eager to try to be the kind of wife God wants her to be.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 13.Tell whether or not each of the following statements demonstrates an example of spouses who love, honor, and submit to each other. Explain your answer. f. I forgive my spouse even when she isn’t acting very lovable. Yes. He is trying to be the kind of husband God wants him to be.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 14.Read Hebrews 13:4. How is the marriage bed kept pure? Husband and wife remain faithful to each other and avoid adultery.

WITHIN MARRIAGE 15.Why will a husband and wife who submit to each other want to keep the marriage bed pure? Because of their love for God and one another.

KEY POINT #2 God commands husbands and wives… to love and honor each other.

WHAT DOES GOD COMMAND IN THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT? 1.God commands us to lead pure and decent lives. 2.God commands husbands and wives to love and honor each other. SUMMARY God commands us to lead pure and decent lives and that husbands and wives love and honor each other.
