Commonplace but precise language “The Pedestrian” Commonplace but precise language

First…. Choose a paragraph from “The Pedestrian” that has many sensory details and/or loaded words. Copy it down and highlight selected words that reveal information about the setting or character Write a detailed paragraph explaining how each word reveals something important about the setting or character

Sample paragraph To enter into that silence that was the city at eight o’clock of a misty evening in November, to put your feet upon that buckling concrete walk, to step over grassy seams and make your way, hands in pockets, through the silences, that was what Mr. Leonard Mead most dearly loved to do.

Sample Opening sentence When you are writing an analysis, you must introduce the title, author, and genre (TAG) before you make your thesis statement. In the short story, The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury, the opening sentence creates a desolate setting that shows a stark contrast to the passionate Mr. Mead. The first part shows the TAG and the second part is your thesis statement (what you plan on proving or analyzing)

Rules Begin your analysis with the TAG (Title, author, genre) Write a thesis statement Stay in the third person Stay in the present tense Do not use contractions Don’t use “dead words” or “to be” verbs: use strong action verbs and descriptions. Length should be between 8-10 sentences Type and submit through turnitin.com by Tuesday Bring in a hard copy on Tuesday Check the “Links” section on my website for alternatives to “to be” verbs and alternatives to “is”

Grading Rubric: 45 points Item Point Value TAG 3 Thesis Statement 5 Analysis: Must demonstrate ability to reference the text and explain the meaning of key words in a detailed and thorough manner. Minimum sentences must be written for full credit. 20 20: thorough and detailed: min sentences achieved(8-10) 15: somewhat thorough(5-7) 10: Hardly Thorough (4) 5: Not thorough (3) 0: less than 2 sentences Present Tense 3rd person Strong verbs(no dead or to be verbs) 7 (a point will be taken off for each dead word with a max of 7)
