Workload, Morale, and Quality of Life California Institute of Technology 2007 Student-Faculty Conference

Building on Past Recommendations… 2003/2005 Committees - TQFR - Lunch hours for campus offices - Healthier food choices in C-Store, CDS - Non-clashing exams/sets during midterms - Attempts to get a handle on unit data - REGIS - Stewardship Committee

2006 Exit Survey… 70% satisfied with employment opportunities 66% would come to Caltech again 58% would recommend it to a student like themselves

2006 Exit Survey… Less than half satisfied with quality of advising process, especially before choosing their major In 2005 Faculty Survey, a significant number of faculty felt they were not informed enough on how to advise.

This year’s committee Student/Faculty Interactions - ARC is setting up student faculty lunches on a once a term basis - ASCIT has ample funds for this, but for one reason or another they are largely unused. - Suggested to institute advisor-student lunches (possibly using ASCIT funding) on a once-a-term basis - Also, propose MOSH/ASCIT funded faculty lunches in the houses

This year’s committee Student/Faculty Interactions - Faculty Guide website is operational, does a lot to inform - A student-led portion of the faculty orientation might be useful as well - Highlight role of student option reps as complement to advisors

This year’s committee Athletic uniting - Athletic Department is looking into how sports teams are united in relation to PE classes - Suggested survey of student-athletes to gather uniting data

This year’s committee Counseling and tutoring - Services are not as well publicized as they could be. - Advisor should have these resources at hand to suggest to student

Upcoming developments Admissions is forming a task force to explore possibly introducing partially holistic methods of evaluation of applicants

Thanks for coming! Committee members: - Noah Rahman- Prof. Jim Heath (CCE) - Leighland Feinman - Prof. John Eiler (GPS) - John Hasier - Prof. John Preskill (PMA) - Daniel Rowlands - Jane Curtis (Counseling) - Andrea Dubin - Nathaniel Borneman- Floor open for questions - Muzhou Wang /discussion. - Haile Xiao
