Open Panel Discussion on Solving Chapter and Section Problems Brian Berg (2012 SCV Section Chair) John Swan (past Computer Soc. Chapter) Paul Wesling (e-GRID Editor)

Brian Berg Coordinated Marvell event for IEEE-USA 2012 Public Service Award for Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, which 2012 PACE Chair Kiran Gunnam secured Coordinated IEEE Milestone for EEPROM and Flash Memory

Consultants’ Network of Silicon Valley (CNSV) Revamping IEEE-CNSV had 73 members in late 2005 Its website was revamped in early 2006 –Member profile search added –These profiles float around the web, and are well-recognized by google –Member profiles are found by Google when consulting skill searches are done (independent of going to site itself) Membership tripled by late 2010

Reviving the Women in Engineering (WIE) Chapter I sent a notice to the section re: this week’s Region 6 WIE 2-day event at Google –I asked for volunteers to help revive chapter As a result of this and this event, about 40 people are willing to help I set up a google docs spreadsheet to keep track of these people –These people can edit their info I set up an listserver to allow communication At least two WIE volunteers are at this training event

John Swan John successfully led the revival of the Computer Society chapter in the SCV Section John won the Computer Society’s Meritorious Service Award (right) John just found out that he has been named a member of the society’s Golden Core

John Swan: Chapter ideas Ask one important question every ExCom: –What worked well, what did not?  For your last technical meeting  Helps you to be proactive for next mtgs. Use Cloud tools for management: –Google Docs or Dropbox for admin files –Eventbrite for registration Don’t let this be the last thing you do! Always look for new, energetic volunteers

John Swan: Chapter ideas Finding speakers: –Your Society’s publications –Conference speakers & keynotes –LinkedIn searches Your Venue Host: New & Important! –Find a Champion at your host company! –Preferably VP level or SVP –Take out to lunches with your officers –Invite to SVEC Banquet (Feb.)

John Swan: Chapter ideas Enthusiasm –Have a vision and a passion for what you do –Share your vision with your team Encouragement –Recognize key contributors at tech mtgs.  Public recognition  Certificates, etc. –Continually recognize your Host!

Paul Wesling, e-GRID Editor and 1996 Olympic Torch Bearer Paul was a Community Hero and one of the torchbearers for the 1996 Olympic Torch Relay, which passed through 42 states over 15,000 miles in an 84-day trek across America

Paul Wesling: Chapter ideas Chapter volunteers for your ExCom: –Always have 2 or 3 MORE slots than current volunteers (to show openness) –Entrain one or two regular technical meeting attendees, to do a minor job – then move them to more responsibility

Anything is Possible, so “Think Different” for your Chapter Thank you!
